We wanted to take a minute to take you back through the years. In 2003 Jason and Tawnee founded our organization, then named NorCal Equine Rescue. They had no idea how big and active of an organization it would become, nor that it would become national. “NorCal” for Northern California, “Equine” for horses, donkeys, ponies, etc, and “Rescue” because they would be rescuing them. The website in those early days was quite simple.
As the organization grew, the website definitely needed to be updated, so Jason worked and worked and designed this website. This website served for many years as the online presence of our organization.
Then in 2010 it became evident that NorCal Equine Rescue was outgrowing its name, and the board decided to adopt the new name Horse Plus Humane Society. Once again Jason got to work and the following website was made. Changing the name did not change the mission of our organization. We are still focused on saving horses and other members of the equine family from slaughter and abuse, we are still located in northern Ca, but our mission has grown to include so much more including helping farm animals. Humane Society’s are all separate organizations and we are not affiliated with, nor do we receive funding from, any other local or national organization that also includes the name “Humane Society” in it.
We are pleased to announce that our website has a whole new look and feel to it! Jason has been working hard on the new site for some time now, and today it was all polished up and made live. You will notice the needs that we have listed on our homepage. The first is the Auction Rescue. The horses at the auction need to be rescued! Known killer buyers, and their agents, regularly attend the auctions, in defiance of California state law, purchasing horses that are then shipped over the border and on to slaughter. We need your help to rescue every horse that falls below meat price at the auctions. Let’s make those killer buyers go home with empty trailers!

Our second need is for a full time horse trainer. With an average of more than one horse coming into the shelter every day, many of them completely untrained, we simply do not have the staffing to train all of the untrained horses that come into our shelter. Adopters come to the shelter, and usually pass by the untrained horses as they would rather adopt a horse that is already trained to ride. We desperately want to add a full time trainer to our staff, to make the horses more adoptable and give them a brighter future. We need your help to make this happen!
One of the trainers in the Extreme Rescue Makeover, Kirsty Meyers, is in a position where she could become the full time trainer at Horse Plus Humane Society. She has a lot of experience, and has taken college classes on horse training, and her experienced really showed with Diamond in the Extreme Rescue Makeover. She would be a very valuable asset to our team, and would be instrumental in saving the lives of many horses, taking them from unadoptable, untrained, unhandled, to being well trained, ridable, adoptable horses with a bright future.
