We are planning a rescue mission at an auction tomorrow. There will be about 100 horses at this auction, and we need your help to save as many as we can! We have raised enough funds to rescue 11 horses, we have room to rescue and quarantine 20+ horses. We will rescue as many horses as funds allow. Auctions are places where anyone can win the bid, and most often it is a kill buyer who wins the bid. They purchase so many horses, it is heartbreaking. I want to share a story about a pony we rescued 2 months ago from the very same auction. Her name is Misty. Misty was scared and bewildered, standing in a pen at the auction yard, waiting to be sold to the highest bidder. She was utterly miserable and sick. She kept coughing and coughing, trying to clear the infection from her lungs, and she had a runny nose.
She didn’t know when she was shuffled down the dark alleys at the auction into the ring that she was saved thanks to donations from people like you. All she knew was that someone was pushing her around, and they scared her. The strange room she entered was bright and was so loud with someone talking very fast and very loud. Soon it was over and she was sent out the big door into the dark alleys again. When I looked into her pen after the auction I could tell that she was so miserable and very skinny. I could see both of her hip bones and her spine. It always breaks my heart when ponies are skinny. It doesn’t take much to feed a pony, and whoever had her before just didn’t care about her.
When I went into her pen she hurried to the other side, her eyes wide with fear. I told her that everything was going to be OK, but there was no way she could know that her worries were over. All I could do is gently pet her and comfort her, letting her know that I was a good person.
Back at our shelter she began to see that life had made a turn for the better. She really enjoyed being able to eat yummy grass and have no worries about when she would get fed again.
It’s been 2 months since we rescued her, and she is doing very well. She really enjoys life now! She has a wonderful home lined up and we know she will be loved and cared for forever. Misty’s story could have been so different. If people just like you didn’t step up to give a gift of life, we would not have been able to save Misty and give her a bright future. She is a very lucky pony, and it is because of people like you.
I don’t know what horses will be at the auction tomorrow, but I know that with your help we can save a lot of them.
