On December 18th we rescued 8 horses and and a donkey that were starving to death in Tennessee. Sadly 3 horses had already died on the property before we were able to rescue them, and the others were not far from deaths door.
They have been with us just over a month and their transformations are amazing. Please enjoy the updates below, it is amazing to see what good food will do for starving horses!
Liberty Hill’s Lucky Seven, a registered Gypsy Horse, has gained 111 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. He is 14.1 hands, (about 4 years old) and weighed 628 on 12-18-15. On 1-17-16 Liberty Hill’s Lucky Seven weighed 739.
Amigo has gained 48 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. He is 15.3 hands, (about 16 years old) and weighed 969, on 12-18-15 on 1-17-16 Amigo weighed 1017.
Grandma has gained 70 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 14.3 hands, (in her 20s) and weighed 765 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Grandma weighed 835.
Valentine (See the heart on her side) has gained 95 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 14.2 hands, (about 18 years old) and weighed 698 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Valentine weighed 793.
Stormy has gained 53 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 14.2 hands, (about 17 years old) and weighed 726 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Stormy weighed 779.
Grace has gained 68 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 14.1 hands, (about 7 years old) and weighed 739 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Grace weighed 807.
Peachy has gained 129 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 14.3 hands, (about 11 years old) and weighed 779 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Peachy weighed 908.
Max has gained 147 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. He is 15.1 hands, (about 15 years old) and weighed 953 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Max weighed 1100.
Ivy has gained 64 lbs on the weight tape in the last month. She is 11.2 hands, (about 16 years old) and weighed 277 on 12-18-15, on 1-17-16 Ivy weighed 341.
Ivy has had the hardest time of them all. The day after she was rescued she laid down in the sun and was so weak she could not get back up.
Ivy was put in a sling to try to get her to stand. Tawnee gave her electrolytes and sugars that the vet recommended.
The vet gave Ivy an IV with fluids. The vet said if we did not rescue Ivy when we did, she would have been dead on the ground like 3 of her pasture mates.
Ivy’s weak condition was very heart wrenching. For over a week she refused to drink water on her own and all the fluids given her were through a syringe in her mouth. It was exhausting work but we kept hoping that Ivy would find the will to survive.
It was a huge step forward when Ivy drank water on her own for the first time.
After nearly a month in the sling she was finally able to walk without collapsing.
Although she was able to walk she would still collapse and was unable to get up. It was very exciting when Ivy was able to get up from laying in the sun on her own. You can watch the video by clicking here.
