donate At Horse Plus Humane Society, we're all about ensuring the health and happiness of animals. As the only horse shelter to employ two full-time veterinarians, we're in a unique position to care for a large number of horses and other animals. At our shelter, we place a significant importance on hoof care for horses, as it's crucial to their wellbeing. We've found that a staggering 98% of our equine arrivals require farrier attention on intake. Hoof neglect can lead to a myriad of health issues, as hooves bear the full weight of these magnificent creatures. Repairing neglected hooves can be a lengthy process, sometimes taking up to a year. There are instances when the damage is so severe that full restoration is sadly impossible. Our dedicated team of veterinarians and farriers work tirelessly to provide the best possible care. Without this fantastic team, some horses coming to us in a state of severe neglect might not have a chance. Thankfully, with the help of our compassionate experts, these horses get the love and attention they deserve.
Helping horses find their stride from a challenging past to a joyful present is what we strive for. We work with the rescued horses to provide them with a robust foundation, helping the horses with basic tasks such as standing tied, picking up their hooves, loading into a trailer, etc. We also train horses to accept a saddle and bridle, preparing them for trail riding.
Many of our rescued horses carry the weight of past traumas. Our caring team of trainers pours their skills and compassion into showing these horses that the world has kindness to offer. This transforms their fear and mistrust into a newfound sense of love and confidence. Through our diligent and nurturing rehabilitation and training process, we light the path for a brighter future for these horses.
We are dedicated to providing a comfortable transition for horses awaiting their forever homes. Our sheltered horses enjoy interaction with both their equine friends and our caring team. When visitors bring apples and carrots, we ensure these treats reach our waiting horses, adding a touch of sweetness to their day. Newly arrived horses needing quarantine are also part of our sheltering role. Horses entering from the slaughter pipeline get at least 30 days of quarantine, or more if our medical team advises. Regular check-ups and prompt medical attention are part of our commitment to the horses available for adoption, thanks to our in-house veterinary team. On average, a horse stays with us for about 90 days before finding a home or moving to another adoption organization.
Our bustling facility, spread across 50 acres, houses more than 30,000 sq ft of sheltered space, requiring diligent upkeep. It's our everyday task to ensure barns and fences are in top-notch condition. Our collection of essential equipment, ranging from vehicles for rescue missions to tools for animal care, is constantly used and maintained. We boast a full-size pick-up truck for hauling horse trailers, four diverse horse trailers for rescue missions, and versatile side-by-sides for transporting feed and managing waste. Our tractor stands ready for mowing grass and distributing hay bales. Each piece of equipment holds a crucial role in our daily operations. It may demand constant maintenance, but without these, our mission would be impossible to accomplish.
We're incredibly proud of our dedicated team who work around the clock to ensure the best care for our animal buddies. Being the only horse shelter with two full-time veterinarians is a testament to our unyielding commitment. Our staff's tireless efforts have molded us into a superbly strong shelter team over time. It's their passion for animals that fuels their relentless work to help our four-legged friends find loving homes. Our volunteers are the cherry on top, adding to our organization with their unparalleled dedication and love for animals.
Our volunteer days are a wonderful way for volunteers to join us. As they evolve within the program, they have the opportunity to take on diverse roles. This nurturing environment allows our volunteers to grow and contribute in meaningful ways.
