Thursday it was a rather slow day at the shelter, with only 1 horse surrendered for the Last Act of Kindness. The critters in the lower pasture were just hanging out enjoying the warm sunshine. Jack and Shadow have really become good friends and where one is, the other is sure to be close by.
The staff, however, were anxiously waiting for 5:00 pm, closing time, to come. They’ve been going on trail rides once a week. Everyone loves going on trail rides and it’s a great way to further evaluate and exercise horses. Shania loaded right up into the trailer.
She looked forward in the trailer and saw that there were already 4 of the staff’s personal horses in the front 2 compartments of the trailer.
Steven was going to be riding Max, he was the last horse to load up. Max is such a magnificent looking horse.
For our old time blog readers you will remember the days when flat tires were a 2 to 3 times a week occurrence. Well, heading out on the trail ride one of the trailer tires blew. Judylynn and Tawnee were happy that Steven was along to change the tire.
The horses didn’t seem to mind the delay and just watched wide eyed to see what was happening.
Soon the new tire was put on and the old tire was loaded up in the truck so they could hit the road again.
By the time they arrived at the trail head, the sun was pretty much setting.
Everyone worked as fast as they could to get the horses saddled and ready to go. At least they could have a short trail ride!
Shania is such a good girl, and Lydia, one of our new staff members, enjoyed riding her.
The trail ride was lots of fun and it’s great to get everyone out of the office and enjoying the scenery on the back of a horse.
Max is a 14 year old off the track Thoroughbred gelding. He did excellent on the trail, he didn’t even spook when a small herd of deer stampeded. He was a very good boy. Meanwhile Lydia had completely fallen in love with Shania. Shania was the mare who was surrendered by the owner who had health problems a little over a week ago. Lydia decided to adopt Shania, and we will be excited to tell her that Shania will have such a great home.
All too soon it was time to turn around as the sun was slipping behind the hills.
By the time they all got back to the trailer it was pretty dark.
It was a great day and everyone had a lot of fun and are looking forward to the next staff trail ride, hopefully there will be no flat tires and they can hit the trails sooner.
