The Rescue Story
In August we shared with you information about an individual in the Olivehurst area (about 45 minutes from our shelter) who had a number of dead horses on his property. There were also skinny horses along with horses that were not skinny yet. We released a video that we put together from footage obtained from private individuals who were concerned about the situation. There were at least 6 horse carcass’ rotting on the ground in this video, and more parts scattered around, it is hard to determine how many dead horses are in this area. We asked people on our Facebook page to please share their concerns with the District Attorney’s office with the information we shared with you. News 10 did a news story on our findings. You can watch the news story by clicking here.
Earlier this week we got a call from a retired kill buyer that the man, where the dead horses were found, had to get rid of some of his horses, and even talked about just shooting them. We agreed that we could purchase the horses to save their lives, we would either be saving them from being shot to death or being shipped to a slaughter auction. A bill of sale contract was written up and we sent our team down to rescue as many as he would sell us. We were so anxious that he wouldn’t sign the contract and back out of selling us any of the horses, but he kept his word and agreed to let us rescue some of the horses.
On Tuesday 19 horses were purchased and transported safely to our shelter. On Thursday an additional 4 were purchased and transported to our shelter from his auction in Lincoln. There was a mix of (no doubt pregnant) mares, youngsters, and mature stallions, who had all been running together for who knows how long. That is a total of 23 horses rescued from a very scary fate this week.
As you can imagine this is a huge financial strain on the shelter. We really need your help to cover this emergency rescue. The horses are in all ranges of ages and body conditions. The majority of the horses are healthy, although most have poor hoof care.
Sadly, some are in horrible condition with bones protruding from their bodies. Our vet has examined them and found that lack of proper care is the cause for this horse’s poor health.
This poor mare is only 14 years old and is literally a rack of bones.
