We went to the auction with a goal of saving 20 horses. We didn’t know if we would be able to do that, but at the end of the auction, we had saved an amazing 31 precious lives!
While the horses were being auctioned off, some of our volunteers were helping with fundraising so we could rescue more horses. Others were encouraging Tawnee to keep rescuing “donations will come in, just save one more” they kept saying!
When Tawnee reached 30 horses saved she knew she couldn’t keep bidding. It was devastating watching the kill buyers buying the horses at the end of the auction. Jason and Tawnee headed to the office to pay for the 30 horses they had saved. The bill just to save their lives came to over $10,500!
When they headed back to start sorting the horses they found a very cute sight. It was a baby donkey and a mini they rescued trying to comfort each other. Take a minute to look at the minis back hooves.
The mini’s hooves are in horrible condition. The hooves are literally curling up and it is very difficult for this little guy to walk.
The baby horse in this photo on the left we purchased for a mere $65. That is all her life was worth at auction. All of the horses in this picture were rescued!
Outback our rescue team was sorting out the horses and making sure they would be comfortable for the night.
This is the big Belgium we posted on our Facebook page. Yes we rescued him! When he was in the auction ring they said “All he has ever done is worked like a slave.” And this is the thanks he gets for serving humanity so faithfully for so long? He is so skinny!
Tawnee walked by the auction ring where the last few horses were still being sold. There was a pony in the ring and she just couldn’t let him get shipped to slaughter. Everyone had left the auction except the kill buyers. Tawnee won the bid bringing the total rescued to 31 horses!
