The auction is tomorrow, I always feel so uncertain the night before the auction. One of my many jobs at Horse Plus Humane Society is to do the fundraising for our monthly auction rescues. I’m always worried. What if we don’t raise enough funds to rescue these precious horses that will be at the auction tomorrow? What if there’s a Big Lick horse there that desperately needs help? What if there’s a giant draft horse who is completely lame after years of hard work and nobody wants him but the kill buyer because he knows how much he can sell the big horse at the slaughterhouse?

You never get used to going to auctions, I have been to hundreds of horse slaughter auctions across the United States and it’s something you never truly can get used to or be truly prepared for. In the last 16 years, I have seen so many different horrific things at auctions, I have cried my eyes out before because there was nothing more I could do. I’ve seen horrific injuries, I have hugged horses that smell like they’re already dead, the smell of death is something that most people don’t think a live animal can have but I have smelled it many times on horses that have given up on life. As an Animal Rescuer, I have to stay strong and focus on saving as many animals as I can but it’s not an easy job. How can you focus when you just watched a horse die as you held his head and told him everything was going to be alright. I feel so bad for animals who take their last breath in a crowded noisy auction pen. Some die from the pure exhaustion of falling in a slaughter truck and being trampled. It’s all so hard to see firsthand, it’s hard to process it all. There’s only one thing that makes it all worth it, only one thing that keeps me going. It is being able to save so many horses out of the slaughter pipeline because of support from people like you. Every horse we save at auction has a special story, sometimes I can only guess what their story was before they ended up at an auction yard.

The excitement I feel with each horse we rescue and knowing that we are about to transform their lives to something amazing, something worth living for, makes the hardship of being an animal rescuer 100% worth it. I know we can’t save all the horses at the auction, but I know that every horse we are able to save is because of people giving what they can to make it happen. I don’t know how many horses we’ll be able to save tomorrow at the auction but I really hope we can at least save 20 but that’s up to you.
Again thank you all so much for your support, as I’ve always said you all are the true heroes. Without you we wouldn’t be able to rescue the horses we do.
