The auction is in less than 24 hours, and we are excited to get our rescue team in gear to save as many horses as we can. We have currently raised enough funds to rescue and shelter 15 horses from the slaughter pipeline. Our goal is to save at least 20, but we can rescue more if funds allow. We don’t know exactly how many horses will be at the auction, but typically there are over 100.
The auction is in Cookville, TN but horses come to this auction from all over the eastern United States. We commonly see horses from Florida, Ohio, and beyond. There is always at least 1 huge semi-truck ready and waiting to haul horses to slaughter, and multiple kill buyers driving smaller rigs. Horse slaughter is real, and it breaks our hearts that so many horses are exported into Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered.
We will send out an email after we arrive at the auction with an update. We are sometimes able to send out pictures of some of the horses at the auction. Please understand there are typically over 100 horses and often we are unable to rescue the particular horses in the photos. If the horse is in the auction ring and the price goes above what kill buyers are bidding, we stop bidding too. There are sometimes a few private homes that are at the auction looking for a horse and there are a couple of other rescues that are starting to attend this auction off and on. Kill buyers bid on every single horse at the auction if the price goes low enough.
