In June we saw Larcan standing in the Auction Yard and we immediately knew that we had to do our best to save this little guy. He was in such rough shape it was heartbreaking. He had an old injured eye that was going to need to be removed, and his hooves were so long that every step was extremely difficult, painful and awkward. When he went through the auction ring, as expected nobody wanted this little pony that had been so neglected. At that auction, we saved a total of 32 horses including little Larcan.

As soon as little Larcan arrived at our shelter his evaluation process began. He was vaccinated, given antibiotics, his eye was examined, he was dewormed and fully examined by our veterinarian. We were really worried that he had sustained permanent damage from his extremely overgrown neglected hooves. The veterinarian wasn’t sure if the little guy would make it, and recommended that we start immediate treatment rehabbing his hooves and then do the eye surgery when he was a little stronger and we knew he was going to make it.

Our veterinarian and farrier went to work on his long hooves. A saw was used to cut through his hooves so the farrier could use his hoof trimming tools. You can watch a video his hooves being trimmed at this link: https://www.facebook.com/horsehumane/videos/2321640164781386/
After Larcan hooves were trimmed, we watched him closely to see how his rehabilitation was going and if he was going to respond to his rehab treatments. During one of his veterinarian examinations our veterinarian gave us the great news that little Larcan was doing good and should make a full recovery. It was time to move on to his injured eye removal surgery. His eye removal surgery went well, but he took awhile recovering from that surgery. We continue to work with this precious little guy and were thrilled with his recovery process. He even got to be a star in the Horse Rescue Heroes reality TV show.

We were so happy when it was finally time for little Larcan to be adopted into a loving home. We just knew the perfect adopter would snap him up in no time at all, but sadly as hundreds of adopters passed through our shelter over the months looking for their new horse they passed over the little one-eyed pony. We told Larcan that the perfect home was out there, he just had to be patient… and one day a special person came! She absolutely fell in love with little Larcan and she adopted him! We were so happy and thrilled for him.

Since he has been adopted, we have received updates that just melts our hearts. Little Larcan being loved and spoiled with his new family. They absolutely love him and he is fitting right in and just soaking up all the love and attention.

It’s hard to think of what would have happened to little Larcan if we had not been at that auction and saved him. Nobody wanted him at the auction, the kill buyers sized him up trying to figure out how much extra weight he would add to their load and if he would be worth the hassle. Thanks to support from people like you, we were able to save him and change his entire world. On December 17th we will be going back to save more horses and ponies just like little Larcan. Will you help us save them from the slaughter pipeline? Every dollar helps!
