The auction is tomorrow and so far we have raised enough funds to rescue 13 horses. There’s typically over a hundred horses at this auction and all kinds of horses are sold to the highest bidder no matter who they are. Kill buyers are big clients who frequent the auction buying up every horse they can and shipping them to Mexico or Canada for Slaughter. The horses are slaughtered for human consumption and their meat is sold around the world.
The kill buyers try to buy every horse they can, but they will make the most money off the fat ones and will pay about $0.50 a pound for them on the hoof. There are always skinny horses there who have bounced around in the slaughter pipeline, unable to eat enough food because other horses chase them away from it, or by owners not wanting to consult with a vet and make a hard decision on a horse who is suffering with chronic medical problems.
Some horses we see at auction just stand there looking completely depressed, as if they have lost everything they ever knew but they can’t talk about it, they can’t ask for help, and they know that their future is uncertain. Will you help us save as many horses as we can tomorrow? Will you help us intercept them from continuing down the slaughter pipeline?
