YOU can save a horse from the Slaughter Pipeline this Christmas. No horse deserves to spend the holiday season on the road to Mexico or in a holding pen waiting for final shipment. Horses sold in the slaughter price range at the auction really have two options: rescue or be shipped. Kill Buyers would be purchase every horse they can without regard to their age, temperament, training, or whether they were a family’s special companion. All they see are dollars on hooves, and the kill buyers would very happy to load up their big trucks with horses and make money off of their deaths, but we can change that! With your support, we can rescue and care for 15+ horses out of the slaughter pipeline. We are going to an auction where horses are sold for slaughter on December 15th. Our goal is to rescue 15 horses, but hopefully more!
Thanks to Giving Tuesday we were able to raise $5,000 towards our Auction Rescue Fund. That is five horses that can be saved. On average it costs just about $1,000 to rescue a horse out of the slaughter pipeline, kill buyers pay around $0.55 a pound for horses at auction. After rescue we transport the horses back to our facility where our veterinarian and intake team are waiting and ready to help each and every horse. Horses are given a thorough evaluation by our medical team including x-rays, if needed, to determine what is going on with each horse. If a horse is suffering from a chronic painful medical condition our veterinarian will give the horse the Last Act of Kindness to relieve it’s constant pain. This is not the goal but we won’t turn a blind eye to any horse even if it’s just to rescue it, love it, and say goodbye. If the horse passes the veterinarian and intake exams it receives all necessary vaccinations, electrolytes, probiotics, is microchipped, and given whatever the veterinarian feels the horse needs. Then the horses are quarantined for 30 days at our facility. After 30 days of quarantine and being cleared to enter the adoption program horses typically find a home within 60 days of entering the adoption program. We have a full-time horse trainer working with each horse to help it find a wonderful loving home.
