Rescue Story
Mercy was dumped at the October auction with a swollen knee and a hurting heart. She was very confused as to why she was in this horrible scary place, with people shoving her into dirty pens with only a dry, empty water bucket. They didn’t care that her knee was swollen and in pain, no one seemed to even notice it. It had obviously gotten worse over time and she limped on it, but still they ran her through the auction ring and auctioned her off, one auction after another. Mercy never foresaw her life ending up in such a dark place but here she was, and what could she do about it? Nothing.

In her eyes you could tell she was depressed and tired from jumping from auction to auction. It was as though nobody wanted her because she had a hurt and swollen knee. So slowly, auction by auction she was on her way to slaughter.
When we saw Mercy at the auction we knew we had to rescue her and give her a better chance at life. You could tell she hadn’t eaten or drinken in a while, she seemed dehydrated and tired.
Mercy was clearly on her way to slaughter, nobody wanted to deal with or pay money into Vet care for Mercy’s leg or take the time to build her weight back up. But our bid was just high enough to rescue her out of the kill buyers biddings. She was safe now and she didn’t need to worry about where she was going next because the next thing she saw after being transported to our shelter was a safe haven for horses just like her. Horses that came from an abusive or neglectful situation. Horses that felt all was hopeless, now at our shelter safe from all of the pain and suffering at abusive homes or slaughter auctions.
Our Vet examined and X-rayed her leg to make sure nothing was broken, thankfully nothing was broken, just swollen. We assume she had gotten kicked in the knee by another horse but we don’t know for sure. When we rescue horses from the auction we don’t know where they’ve come from, what they’ve been through, we don’t know their story but we try to help them with the best of our ability.
We treated Mercy’s leg daily and started her on grain and supplements. Now she is a beautiful happy horse free of all the pain she once knew. She continues to get grain each day to keep up her healthy weight. Mercy had a rough start at life but now she is in good hands and we can’t wait to find her the right home. Being only 2 years old gives her many years yet to learn new things in any direction!

If it wasn’t for amazing, kind-hearted people like you, who knows where Mercy would be right now. People just like you made Mercy’s life better and so many other horses like her. Unfortunately she is not the only horse with a story like this in fact, sadly she is one of thousands… Without you Horse Heros these horses wouldn’t be given a second chance. We will be going to another auction December 15th to rescue more horses just like Mercy, you can help us outbid the kill buyers.
