The auction rescue is today and we are asking that you become a Horse Hero and help us rescue horses out of the slaughter pipeline. Rescuing horses out of the slaughter pipeline is very physically and emotionally difficult. Not everyone can handle it or has the experience to know who the kill buyers are and what’s actually happening at the auction, but anyone can join our rescue efforts by making a donation right now to help us. Without people just like you making a donation, we wouldn’t be able to rescue, shelter, and protect all the horses we do.
No donation is ever too small. It all adds up and together we can help a lot of horses. We don’t know how many horses will be at the auction tomorrow but typically there are about 100 horses. There are horses in all shapes and sizes, some skinny, some fat, some babies, some very old, but they all Are at risk of being sold in the slaughter price range and need your help. We will bid on every horse we can that is in the slaughter price range, kill buyers are paying up to or even more than 55 cents a pound. After we rescue the horses, they are transported back to our shelter.
Once they arrive at our shelter they are weighed and then carefully evaluated by our veterinarian and intake team. If any medical problems are found the evaluation becomes more in-depth with taking x-rays if needed to determine what the horse needs. If a horse is found to have a serious chronic problem that requires the Last Act of Kindness they are humanely euthanized by our veterinarian. If the horse passes the intake evaluation process they are given electrolytes, probiotics, antibiotics, dewormed, vaccinated, microchipped, and anything else the veterinarian recommends. It is a very in-depth process the horses go through. After everything is done the horses are then quarantined for 30 days. At the end of the 30-day quarantine, if they are healthy, they are re-weighed to track their progress and join the other horses in our adoption program. None of this would be possible without amazing people just like you!
