Thanks to all of the amazing horse heroes who donated to make this possible, we were able to rescue 22 horses and donkeys out of the slaughter pipeline. Three of the horses are receiving intensive care at the University of Tennessee in a program developing protocols for re-feeding emaciated horses.
Five of the horses we rescued were in such critical care that the last act of kindness was the only thing we were able to do for them. They received veterinarian examinations and x-rays if needed. These horses were suffering from a variety of serious medical conditions including severe arthritis, an old broken leg, an inoperable hernia, and tumors. We are thankful that these horses were able to come to our shelter, even if it was only to have people loving them and saying goodbye. They enjoyed a yummy bucket of grain before they were sedated and drifted off into a pain-free sleep. Rest in peace sweet ones.
