29 Slaughter Pipeline Survivors Arrived at Our Facility!

Today was an amazing day rescuing 29 precious lives from the slaughter pipeline, and that was all thanks to support from horse heroes who donated what they could to save lives. We initially rescued 27 animals at the auction, and then this morning the auction owner arranged for us to save 2 more from a trader who left them at the auction, so in all we saved 29!! Our veterinarian and intake staff were waiting for the horses when they arrived at the shelter, and jumped right into action. One by one each animal was individually evaluated and given the help they needed. One of the horses, a 3 year old Palomino, who is emaciated and on death’s door despite being so young, desperately needed to have emergency IV fluids to save his life.

Once the 4,500 ml of fluids were given, he perked up and was interested in his surroundings and the spark of life was coming back into his eyes. He is still very weak and we are concerned about him. Sadly 4 of the animals we rescued were just too far gone, and it was just too late for them and there was nothing more we could do than give them the Last Act of Kindness. One had a dissolved coffin bone, causing excruciating pain, one had severe neurological problems where it couldn’t even walk straight, one horse had a broken leg that healed wrong, making it very difficult for him to walk, and the other had severe unmanageable arthritis. Even though we had to say goodbye to them we are thankful that we were able to save them from being shipped to slaughter and dying a horrific death. All of the other horses are settled in enjoying delicious food and fresh clean water. They all received veterinarian care and an initial intake evaluation by our trained auction intake team. At the end of the day, it was nice to see them settling in and starting to feel safe.
