Horse Shelter Heroes – Episode 12 – March 19-25

As the coronavirus outbreak continued sweeping across the country, Horse Plus Humane Society made the tough, but absolutely necessary, decision to close the shelter to the public. With statewide shutdowns unfolding and safety at the forefront, the team shifted into a tighter, more focused routine. Their mission hasn’t changed one bit: keep every animal safe, healthy, and cared for.
Even without visitors, the barn is far from quiet. The caregivers doubled down on the basics; feedings, grooming, medical checks, and daily work that keeps the herd thriving.

Meet the Horses Behind the Scenes
Thunder – The Gentle Giant

Thunder, a sweet 19-year-old love bug, stole the spotlight early in the episode. During grooming he stood like a perfect gentleman; calm, patient, and clearly enjoying the attention.
Dakota – Those Blueberry Eyes!

Dakota turned heads with his bright “blueberry eyeballs,” as the team lovingly calls them. Curious and alert, he peeked around to see what everyone was doing, soaking in the action like a true character.
Smoke – Hoof-Care Day

Smoke spent part of his day getting his shoes pulled and his feet freshly trimmed. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s essential, and he handled it like a champ.
Copper Penny’s Surprise News

One of the biggest moments of the episode came from 3-year-old Copper Penny. After noticing something “a little off” the team brought her into the medical stall for x-rays and deeper evaluation, and discovered she’s pregnant! Exciting news for everyone at the shelter, and a new life to look forward to.
Velma – Beauty Time for a Senior Lady

Velma, a sweet 20-year-old mare, enjoyed a gentle grooming session. Moments like these don’t just keep the horses looking beautiful—they help the team stay connected with each animal, especially the seniors.
Shelter Upgrades Amid the Quiet

Between caring for the horses, staff tackled repairs and improvements, like replacing fencing to keep the pastures safe and secure. Even during shutdown, progress never stops at the shelter.
Moving Forward Together

With the world uncertain and restrictions changing daily, the team continues showing up for the animals who depend on them. No public visits, no big events, just heart, hard work, and commitment.
Through challenges and closures, Horse Plus Humane Society remains exactly what the animals need: a safe haven full of hope.
