“Stay Home, Stay Safe”—But the Work Goes On
With stay-at-home orders in place, the shelter may be closed to the public, but it’s still buzzing with activity behind the scenes. Staff are caring for horses, answering incoming emails, and navigating the ripple effects of a world turned upside down by coronavirus.
The team gently reminds everyone: stay home, stay safe, and remember to support the charities who continue their work during this time. For Horse Plus, donations have slowed, but the horses still need daily feed, bedding, and love.
Meet Sancho: A Sweet Soul Learning to Trust
One of the bright spots this week is Sancho, a ten-year-old rescue who is slowly learning that humans are safe. He’s calm, patient, and genuinely eager to understand what’s being asked of him. Watching him gain confidence has been a rewarding reminder of why this work matters.
A Crematory Win: Official Approval Secured
Behind the scenes, the team also received important news: an official letter from the Tennessee Department of Air Control confirming the crematory unit meets all required guidelines.
Someone had reported the shelter—again—but the inspection cleared them completely. Now, they have the written approval to show anyone who questions the crematory operations in the future. A small but meaningful win.
Dealing With Online Criticism (and Laughing About It)
Of course, no week is complete without a little internet drama. A fresh wave of online critics appeared, one even mocking Tawnya’s makeup (or lack of it). Her response? A good laugh. She rarely wears makeup anyway.
It’s a reminder that no matter how much good you do, someone online will always find something negative to say. But the work continues because the horses matter more than the noise.
Progress in the Round Pen
Another highlight: a handsome gelding who arrived earlier in the day spent time in the round pen learning to lead. He’s patient, willing, and clearly eager to learn. Progress moments like this fuel the team’s spirits.
Coronavirus and the Future of Rescues
The shelter is now officially under a stay-at-home order. One more owner surrender is scheduled, and the team has confirmed approval with local authorities to receive her horse safely.
While auction rescues are temporarily paused, many horses are still being sheltered on-site. They continue to need food, bedding, and all the essentials that keep them healthy and comfortable.
