Horse Shelter Heroes – Episode 20 – April 30 – May 13

If the last couple of weeks at Horse Plus Humane Society could be summed up in one word, it would be whirlwind—and not just figuratively! Between powerful storms, a massive multi-agency rescue, vet days, farrier visits, and even welcoming traveling equines from Oregon, the shelter has been buzzing with nonstop activity and heartwarming progress.

Storms, Straight-Line Winds & A Mission to Rebuild

Mother Nature threw a serious challenge our way when straight-line winds blasted through the shelter, knocking over panels and even flipping one of our shelters completely over. With another storm predicted to bring winds up to 75 mph, the team raced against the clock to brace, rebuild, and fortify the barn before the next round hit.

Despite the chaos, everyone jumped in—patching, boarding, and strengthening structures, because the animals depend on us, rain or shine.
A Grim USDA Report & Renewed Determination

Amid the storm recovery came another blow: the latest USDA report revealed a heartbreaking jump in the number of horses shipped to slaughter—soaring from 390 to 811 in a single week. It’s a sobering reminder of why our work matters and why rescues, rehabilitation, and advocacy remain at the core of our mission.
Vet Day: Bruno Becomes an Ox, Roselyn Improves & Snowy Gets Answers
Our vet team stayed busy with a full lineup of patients:

Bruno the bull, rescued during the recent cruelty case, was officially transformed into an ox. He also had his horns evaluated since he’d been showing some dangerous behavior. Whether Bruno becomes adoptable or joins our resident steer Parsi, we’re committed to giving him a safe, happy life.

Roselyn, who has been struggling with mysterious swelling in various areas, is finally showing encouraging improvement. Her heart sounds better, her inflammation is decreasing, and we’re hopeful her recovery will continue.

Snowy, another resident needing extra care, was examined to get to the bottom of her ongoing discomfort.
Every animal received compassionate attention, and plenty of love.
A Late-Night Arrival: Minis & Donkeys on Their Way to Oregon

At 9:30 p.m., headlights rolled up the driveway. A partner rescue organization from Oregon had saved a group of miniature horses and donkeys from auction and needed a safe layover spot. We opened our gates, providing rest, vetting, health certificates, and a peaceful place to recharge before their long journey home.

Rescues across the country share one mission: keeping vulnerable equines out of danger. Nights like this remind us how connected and powerful this community truly is.
Farrier Day: Donkeys Get Their Spa Treatment

Our farrier arrived to give the donkeys a much-needed trim. They strutted back into their pen afterward, feet feeling fabulous!
Your Support in Action: Shelter Store Orders Rolling In

Since launching our online store, we’ve been overwhelmed—in the best way! Hats, signs, and more are flying off the shelves. Every purchase directly supports rescue efforts, and we are so grateful.
Embert’s Glow-Up: From Fragile to Fabulous

One of the highlights this week was watching Embert, a once-skinny and fearful horse, shine during his desensitization session. His transformation has been remarkable—he’s healthier, more confident, and eager to learn. Moments like these are the heart of what we do.
Through Storms, Surges & Sleepless Nights – Hope Always Wins
Despite turbulent weather, heartbreaking reports, and long days, the shelter remains a place of healing, rescue, and second chances. Every storm we face, literal or otherwise, only strengthens our resolve to keep fighting for the animals who need us most.
Thank you for standing with us, supporting us, and believing in this mission. Together, we make miracles happen every week.
