Horse Shelter Heroes – Episode 28 – July 2 – 8

When Horse Plus Humane Society moved from California to Tennessee, one thing quickly stood out. The state may have limited animal services, but it is far ahead in one crucial area: animal abuse prevention and accountability. Tennessee’s groundbreaking public animal abuser registry allows shelters and rescues like ours to instantly verify whether an adopter has a history of abuse. Even better, a new law now bans convicted abusers from owning pets in the future. For our team, this system is truly life changing because it helps us keep horses safe and ensures they never end up in the wrong hands again.

Chip’s Vet Check and Cookie & Rain’s Adoption Update
Chip, a 17-year-old Tennessee Walking Horse with COPD, was evaluated by our vet. Sadly, his breathing struggles were severe and he was compassionately laid to rest. While this is the hardest part of rescue, we are thankful he received gentle care and a peaceful goodbye.

Cookie and Rain impressed us during their ride and their adoption appointment will be rescheduled. Their prospective home seems wonderful and we look forward to their happy future.

Rehab Pasture for Bailey and Amour and Longtime Friends Gray and Angel
Bailey and Amour moved to the rehab pasture to gain weight and rebuild muscle.

Amour is already showing improvement and both horses will thrive with steady food and freedom to roam.

Gray and Angel, two beloved long-term residents, continue enjoying their quiet pasture together.
Gray guides Angel, who is blind, and their bond is heartwarming.

Trailer Repairs and Fly Predators in Action
Our hardworking rescue trailers received much needed welding and reinforcement so they can continue safely transporting horses.
We also restocked our fly predators, the tiny beneficial insects that keep fly populations low. They make a huge difference and help our horses stay comfortable.

Vet Day and A Gift from a Young Supporter
Coggins tests and health checks were completed for several horses. Each visit ensures our herd stays healthy and well cared for.

We also received handmade masks from Ziya, an amazing 11-year-old supporter who surprised us with her kindness. Her gift brought so much joy to our team.

Percy Learns from Bruno and Makes Us Smile
Percy the cow has been learning how to be a proper bovine thanks to his buddy Bruno. Watching Percy finally get some cow lessons adds a fun bit of happiness to our daily routine.
