At Horse Plus Humane Society, every day is an adventure but some days are nothing short of extraordinary. Our latest rescue mission took us to a local auction, where roughly 80 precious horses were at risk. From auction ring chaos to heartfelt reunions in our pastures, here is a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of our dedicated team.

Helmets Save Lives, Literally
Before the rescue mission even began, our team was reminded why safety is always first. A recent fall left one of our staff with a nasty bruise and a cracked helmet, but thanks to that helmet, serious injury was avoided. It is a vivid reminder that caring for horses also means protecting the humans who love them.
Auction Horses: Health Checks and Surprising Discoveries
The horses arriving from the June auction were carefully evaluated as they came out of quarantine. Some, like May, were unhandled and wary of humans, while others surprised us with unexpected conditions.
One mare appeared pregnant but, after a veterinary check, we learned she was not carrying a foal, though her body suggested she needed extra medical attention. Another, Sunny, had sore shoulders and received immediate care to keep her comfortable.
Meanwhile, little Cain, a newborn foal born here at the shelter, had his big day with a safe and gentle gelding procedure. Each horse arriving has unique needs, and our team works tirelessly to ensure every one receives the care they deserve.
Rescue Missions Require Teamwork
Rescuing horses is about more than lifting them into trailers. It takes paperwork, follow-ups, coordination, and the dedication of a team that cares deeply. Angela joined us to help manage adoption applications, keeping the process smooth for families ready to give these horses a forever home.
The Auction: A Race Against Time
At the auction, chaos and urgency collide. While our fundraising efforts continued outside, our team inside the auction ring worked fast to identify and rescue horses in need.
By the end of the night, we were thrilled to announce that 15 horses were saved, from tiny minis to thoroughbreds. Some were in rough shape with old injuries, extreme exhaustion, or malnourishment, but all were brought to safety.

Compassion in Action: Care, Healing, and New Beginnings
Back at the shelter, every rescued horse received thorough veterinary care. Some had severe leg deformities or arthritis from overwork, while others had facial injuries or lung issues. Each case was carefully evaluated, and in some heartbreaking situations, humane euthanasia was the kindest option.
For many, rescue marked the start of a new life. Horses received dental care, weight management, pain relief, and gentle handling to help them recover from the stress of the auction. After intake, they were turned out in pastures or pens to safely bond, graze, and relax. Watching these moments of connection reminded us why our work is so vital and why every rescue is worth it.
The Reality of Rescue Work
Auction rescues are physically exhausting and emotionally taxing. There are tough moments like seeing horses who have suffered too long and joyful moments like saving those who will now live full and healthy lives. Every horse we help is a reminder of why we do what we do, to give these gentle souls the care, compassion, and homes they deserve.
