From Christmas Cheer to Critical Care

The episode begins on a lighter note: picking out a donated Christmas tree, hanging ornaments made in honor of rescued horses and celebrating small joys amid the hard work. But the tone quickly shifts to what rescue life is really about, with horses arriving from quarantine, weight gains being celebrated and new infrastructure finally coming together thanks to generous donors who made power and water to the barns possible.

A Reminder of Why We Fight

While unloading a new hay feeder, we meet Thomas, a lifelong animal advocate who shares a chilling story of rescuing a horse whose hooves had been mutilated with lag bolts for cosmetic purposes. His story is a powerful reminder that abuse still happens and that speaking up matters.

The Last Auction Before Christmas

As night falls, the team loads up and heads to an auction in eastern Tennessee, knowing full well that slaughter buyers are there too. This is not just another rescue trip. It is the last auction before Christmas, and the stakes could not be higher.

By the end of the night, 29 horses are saved.

Some are thin. Some are blind. Some are elderly, arthritic, foundered, injured, or suffering from untreated medical conditions. One critically injured horse arrives covered in dried blood, barely able to stand. Others are cast aside because they are no longer considered “useful.”

Every single one deserved better.

The Horse No One Wanted Us to Have

One mysterious horse sparked intense resistance at the auction because someone desperately wanted him back and did not want his story shared. Once safely off-site, we discovered why. He was a four-year-old off-the-track Thoroughbred, tattooed, identifiable and once valuable to the racing industry. He had earned over $43,000 and still ended up discarded.

Because stories matter, we make sure to tell them.

When Rescue Also Means Responsibility

The following day brings exhaustion, rain, snow, and heartbreak. Veterinarians evaluate each horse. Some can recover. Some need long-term care. Some, despite our best efforts, are suffering beyond what medicine can fix.

These are the hardest moments. Providing the last act of kindness is sometimes the most humane rescue of all.

Why We Do This

Too many horses are sent to auctions instead of being given dignity, care or humane end-of-life decisions. That burden falls to rescues like ours, not because it is easy, but because it is right.

This Christmas, while slaughter trucks rolled out under cover of darkness, 29 horses did not.

They got warmth.
They got care.
They got a chance.
They got compassion.

None of this happens without the support of donors and advocates like you. Thank you for standing with us through every long night, every hard decision and every life saved!
