Weekly Vet Care and Ongoing Healing
Doc is on site for his regular weekly visit, checking progress on several horses and evaluating new concerns. Winston, who had his damaged eye removed weeks earlier, reaches an important milestone as his stitches are removed and healing looks strong. Other horses receive exams, hoof care, and riding evaluations as they continue preparing for adoption.
Wildflower remains healthy and pregnant, while other horses are closely monitored for weight, comfort and long term soundness. These routine visits are critical to ensuring every animal receives timely care and a path forward.
Sweet Pea’s Fragile Fight
One of the most emotional cases this week is Sweet Pea, a young miniature horse rescued from auction in critical condition. Severely emaciated and struggling to survive, Sweet Pea tragically loses her foal shortly after rescue. At only three years old, she has already endured multiple auctions, extreme neglect, and physical and emotional trauma.
The team moves her into a critical care stall and begins supportive treatment, including medications, vitamins, probiotics and enrichment to help restore her appetite and spirit. Her recovery will take time and her outcome remains uncertain, but she is surrounded by care, comfort and hope.
New Arrivals and Shelter Challenges
The shelter also steps in to help beyond horses, welcoming a surrendered mama cat and her kittens during a stormy week. Heavy rains bring flooding to parts of the barn, adding another layer of challenge as the team works to keep animals safe and dry.
Amid it all, progress continues as fiber internet installation begins at the shelter, opening the door for faster updates, improved communication and future live camera access for supporters.
Adoptions and Second Chances
Several bright moments shine through as horses find new homes. Rowan is adopted and heads off with his adopter full of promise. Rudolph and Storm are chosen together, offering companionship and a quiet retirement to people who value them for who they are, not what they can do.
Winston and Apache are also adopted, giving Winston a future defined not by his missing eye, but by his resilience and gentle nature. Sarge’s adoption brings another celebration, with pickup planned for the following week.
Saying Goodbye to Parcy
The episode closes with a deeply personal loss. Parcy, rescued as a baby from an auction for just five dollars, has been part of Horse Plus Humane Society for nearly twelve years. He traveled to events, touched countless lives and became a beloved ambassador for rescue.
Letting Parcy go is heartbreaking, but his story is one of meaning and love. Without rescue, his life would have been short and tragic. Instead, he was cherished, protected and given a life full of purpose.
This episode is a reminder that every rescue matters. Even when the work is heavy and the goodbyes hurt, every life saved and every moment of kindness makes a difference.
