Clearing Quarantine and Preparing for More

As horses from the April auction completed quarantine, the team carefully evaluated weight gain, health progress and readiness to move forward. Some thrived with improved coats and weight, while others needed continued medical attention. With another auction just days away, quarantine spaces were cleared knowing they would soon be filled again with horses needing help.
Vet Days, Hard Truths & Compassionate Choices

Veterinary exams filled the day with teeth checks, eye evaluations, x rays, and follow ups on long term medical cases. Some horses showed encouraging healing and improvement. Others faced painful realities where humane euthanasia was the kindest option. These moments are never easy, but every decision was made with dignity and the animal’s best interest at heart.

A Birthday Wish That Changed Everything

At the May auction, an unexpected opportunity arose. A horse trader offered 28 equines for below slaughter price, asking only that they be spared from shipping to slaughter. With donations from supporters celebrating a birthday fundraiser, Horse Plus said yes.
Then the auction began.

One by one, more horses entered the ring who could not be left behind. By the end of the night, 43 horses, donkeys, mules, ponies and minis were saved. More than double what was planned, and far beyond the original budget, but every life mattered.
The Reality Inside the Auction Pens

The rescue team encountered heartbreaking conditions. Blind horses terrified by the chaos, severely foundered horses in extreme pain, donkeys struggling to breathe, draft horses with infected legs, and animals marked by neglect and abuse. Each was documented, given pain relief when possible, and loaded carefully for the long trip to safety.

Some animals were already beyond recovery. While devastating, their final moments were spent with compassion and care, not fear and suffering.
Intake, Treatment & the Long Road Ahead

Back at the shelter, intake began immediately. Each horse received electrolytes, deworming, microchips, lice treatment and medical evaluations. Despite exhaustion, the team worked late into the night ensuring every animal was settled, monitored and supported.

Through it all, there were moments of hope. A frightened horse standing up again. A starving draft horse finally eating. A blind horse resting safely beside a gentle companion.
Why Your Support Matters

This rescue would not have been possible without donors who stepped up when it mattered most. Because of you, 43 lives were spared from slaughter, neglect and suffering. They now have a chance at healing, comfort and love.
Horse Shelter Heroes is not just about rescue. It is about showing up when no one else will, even when it is hard, expensive, and emotionally exhausting.
