Frozen Mornings & New Arrivals

The day began with nine horses arriving over the weekend, including a nervous chestnut baby under a year old. With the ground frozen and temperatures biting, the team carefully moved through intake exams, blood draws, vaccinations, microchipping and deworming.

A padded hydraulic squeeze chute helped keep the young horse calm and safe, proving that compassion and safety go hand in hand even on the coldest mornings.
Extra Care for a Very Sick Horse

In quarantine, Pippy received a warm, carefully prepared breakfast packed with senior feed, supplements, vitamins and donated treats. When it is freezing outside, nutrition becomes even more critical.
Supporters made this moment possible, providing everything from supplements to enrichment items that help sick horses recover faster and stay mentally engaged while healing.
Keeping the Barn Safe and Moving

Despite the cold, daily operations continued. New exit lights were installed to improve safety and farrier work kept horses comfortable and mobile. Frozen ground did not stop essential hoof care and every horse received the attention they needed.
Adoption Hope on a Freezing Day

With frost in the air, a long awaited adopter arrived to meet Lulu and Phantom. These moments are the heart of the work.
After medical checks, training and careful evaluation, horses are matched with families ready to give them forever homes.
Even on the coldest days, adoption days bring warmth!
Training Builds Confidence

Trainer Trey shares how unhandled horses begin their journey with humans. Training starts slowly, introducing presence, touch and basic groundwork before moving toward haltering and riding preparation.
Patience is the foundation, especially when winter conditions add extra stress to already uncertain animals.
Snowstorm Prep Begins

As talk of Snowageddon filled the barn, the focus shifted to preparation. Water sources were checked to prevent freezing. Horses were grouped together for warmth. Hay supplies were increased. Puppies and cats were moved into warmer spaces. Salt was spread, alleyways planned for plowing, and blankets were readied.
Every step mattered before the storm hit.
Rescue Does Not Pause for Weather

Even with snow approaching, animals still needed help. A group of cats was transferred to another rescue once the snow cleared.

A dog named Joe arrived after being found shivering on the roadside, hungry, injured and clearly abandoned. He was given warmth, food and medical care as a safe landing place from the cold.
Preparing for the Cold Weekend

Tractors rolled, hay was distributed, stalls were set, blankets were fastened and straw and shavings were hauled in. By nightfall, horses, donkeys, dogs and cats were sheltered, fed and protected from the coming winter storm.
It was the calm before the storm, literally.
Why This Work Matters

This episode shows that rescue does not stop when the snow falls. It gets harder, colder and more urgent. Because of donors, staff and supporters, Horse Plus Humane Society was ready.

Cold weather brings challenges, but compassion, preparation and community make all the difference.
