This episode of Horse Shelter Heroes captures what life at Horse Plus Humane Society really looks like. Busy days, unexpected moments, hard conversations and a whole lot of love for animals who need it most.
From adoptions and shelter transfers to construction dust and tortoise adventures, it was one of those months where everything happened at once!

Adoptions in a Tough Season
As summer faded into fall, adoptions slowed across the country. September brought fewer placements than hoped, a trend many rescues are seeing as economic pressures rise and winter approaches.
Even so, 37 animals found placement through adoptions and transfers, thanks to dedicated staff and strong rescue partnerships!
Horses like Dandy, Penny, Thunder and Judge found loving homes. Puppies, kittens, and bunnies were transferred to partner organizations where many were quickly adopted. Shelter transfers played a critical role in saving lives when local adoption interest dipped.
Doing the Right Thing for Apache
One of the most emotional stories this month involved Apache, a horse surrendered with a request for euthanasia. After thorough veterinary exams and X-rays showed he was healthy and not in pain, the decision was made to move forward with adoption.
Despite backlash from his former owner, Horse Plus stood firm in its mission. Apache went on to a wonderful home, proving once again that every animal deserves an honest medical evaluation and a chance at a good life.
Building for the Future
Behind the scenes, major progress was made on the new vet hospital. Cabinets installed, walls finished, ceilings painted and inspections passed ahead of schedule.
This dedicated medical space will soon allow the full veterinary team to work on-site, dramatically improving care for every animal who comes through the gates.
Seeing the hospital come together was a powerful reminder that rescue is not just about today. It is about building something better for tomorrow.
Training, Trust & Young Horses
Dory, a young mare with a good mind and a bright future, spent time learning groundwork basics. Sessions like these help horses build confidence and prepare them for successful adoptions down the road.
Small wins, like calmly picking up feet, add up to big changes in a horse’s life!
When the Tortoise Goes on a Walk
Yes, even the tortoise made headlines. After escaping his enclosure and taking himself on an adventure, staff improvised, adapted and learned once again that no two days in rescue are ever the same.
Exotic animals bring their own challenges, but they also bring plenty of smiles!
Volunteers Making a Difference
A homeschooling family joined volunteer day as part of their curriculum, lending muscle, curiosity and compassion. They mucked stalls, learned about horse care, and even adopted a cat by the end of the day!
Their story is a perfect example of how education, service and rescue intersect in meaningful ways.
Moving Forward Together
September may have been slower in adoptions, but it was full of impact. Lives were saved, facilities improved, volunteers inspired and partnerships strengthened. Through every challenge, the mission stayed the same. Do what is right for the animals, every single time.
