Horse Shelter Heroes – S3E33
The Fall Adoption Event, lovingly nicknamed Falling in Love, was exactly that. A full day of horses finding homes, families growing, a few unexpected challenges and a whole lot of heart.
From early morning preparations to emotional goodbyes, the shelter was buzzing with life, laughter and purpose!

New Beginnings for Beloved Horses
Several horses found their perfect matches during the event. Samoa, a sweet 16 year old gelding, stole hearts and went home as a birthday gift to his new adopter. Quiet pasture pets, riding companions and special needs horses all found people willing to love them just as they are.
One especially touching adoption was Squid and Misty, longtime companions who arrived at auction together and stayed side by side through quarantine and care. Squid is blind, and Misty serves as his seeing-eye pony. They were adopted together, ensuring their bond remains unbroken!
When Things Do Not Go as Planned
Rescue work is never predictable. While loading Francis for her long-awaited trip home, she panicked, jumped a panel and suffered a serious injury. The team acted quickly, calling the veterinarian and prioritizing her care over transport.
Thanks to fast action and expert assessment, Francis received treatment and stayed safe, reminding everyone that the animals always come first!
Teamwork Makes It Happen
The day also included multiple shelter transfers, with eight horses heading to Mad Hatter Rescue. These transfers created much needed space for future rescues and ensured pasture pets received appropriate placements.
Despite it being a Sunday with limited staff, volunteers stepped up, former team members returned to help, and everyone pitched in wherever needed. From health certificates to loading trailers, it was truly all hands on deck!
Big Steps Forward for the Future
Behind the scenes, exciting milestones were happening. Horse Plus Humane Society officially hired a full-time veterinarian, a major leap forward that will significantly improve daily animal care, medical treatments and long-term outcomes for the horses and other animals.
The nearly completed vet barn passed inspections, teams began moving into new workspaces and the organization celebrated how far it has come.
More Than Horses
The shelter was full of surprises. Families visited a 50-year-old desert tortoise. Kittens found arms to nap in.
Donkeys traveled long distances to loving homes. And one family arrived expecting to look at animals and left with two puppy brothers, surprising their kids in the most unforgettable way.
An Episode That Says It All
The Fall Adoption Event was messy, emotional, joyful and exhausting in the best way. Horses found homes. Families grew. Lives changed. It was a reminder that rescue is not about perfection, it is about persistence, compassion and showing up every single day.
