Expanding Hope Across the Country

The Full Circle of Life Grant deadline has arrived and applications are pouring in from across the United States and even internationally. The dream is growing: a strong network of horse shelters working together, moving horses safely between organizations and filling the gaps in underserved states.
It is about more than funding. It is about building a nationwide safety net so fewer horses fall through the cracks.
Preparing for New Life

Foaling season is approaching and the team is preparing for pregnant mares who are getting closer to delivery. Vaccines are administered, foaling kits are stocked, plasma is ready and snap tests are on hand.

When you rescue horses from auctions, you do not always get perfect records or perfect timelines. But you do get the responsibility to be ready for anything, even a birth two days earlier than expected.
The commitment is simple: be prepared, so every foal has the best possible start.
Hard Truths About Lameness & Pain

This episode does not shy away from the difficult realities.
Several horses undergo thorough evaluations, including x-rays and hands on exams. Severe arthritis, neurological issues, spinal pain and DSLD are uncovered. While some conditions can be treated, others cannot.

Two older horses are found to be suffering from progressive, painful conditions that cannot be fixed. Even though they are beautiful and stoic, their bodies tell a different story.
After careful examination and declining comfort scores, the team makes the heartbreaking but compassionate decision to provide a last act of kindness.

As an open admission shelter, Horse Plus Humane Society accepts horses even when the last act of kindness is the only humane outcome. These are not easy choices. They are made with veterinary evidence, experience and deep compassion.

The message is clear and heartfelt: if you own an aging horse, you are the best person to give that horse a peaceful goodbye when the time comes.
Responsible ownership matters!
Second Chances Through Surgery

Not every case ends in goodbye.
One horse undergoes surgery to remove severe proud flesh. It is a bloody and delicate procedure, but the goal is clear: healing and a chance at adoption.

Another young horse with a club foot shows promising progress after treatment for a puncture wound. With careful planning between the vet and farrier, she may have a real opportunity for a sound future.
Even in the most challenging auction rescues, the team fights to reach horses in time.
A Little Humor Along the Way

In between surgeries and serious evaluations, there are lighter moments.
A chicken catching challenge turns into a hilarious competition with a five dollar bounty per bird. Volunteers succeed, John gets surprised with a live chicken in his office and laughter fills the barn.

And then there is Chatty, the slightly cross eyed, very spoiled resident cat who may or may not be adoptable depending on who you ask. He supervises paperwork, demands attention and reminds everyone that rescue is not just about heartbreak. It is also about connection.
These moments matter. They balance the weight of the work and remind everyone why we do it.

This episode beautifully reflects the full spectrum of rescue life at Horse Plus Humane Society. It is about planning for the future, welcoming new life, confronting hard medical truths, offering second chances where possible and providing peaceful endings when necessary.
Through it all, the mission remains the same: do what is right for the horse, every single time!
