Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E9

It has been a powerful month at Horse Plus Humane Society!
March wrapped up with 45 adoptions and transfers, including a whole group of donkeys finding homes in the same week. Dogs, puppies and small animals also headed to new rescues and families. One long term resident, Hopi, finally found her person. It was a month full of fresh starts.
And behind every happy ending is a whole lot of work.

Building a Safe Space for Small Animals

The team added new kennels to create a calm, welcoming intake space for cats and dogs. When animals arrive scared and unsure, having a clean, quiet place to decompress makes all the difference. Rescue is not just about saving lives. It is about giving them a soft landing.
Glimmer’s Fresh Start

Glimmer’s journey continues!
After years of discomfort from painful wart growths inside his ears, the veterinary team began a long term treatment plan. Because these growths are caused by a virus that some horses never fully clear, they can become sensitive, irritated and prone to infection.

With careful sedation and a detailed approach, treatment has officially begun. It will take time, but the goal is simple. Comfort. Relief. A better quality of life.
This is the advantage of having full time veterinary care on site. Horses like Glimmer get the in-depth attention they deserve.
A Bittersweet Goodbye for Hopi

Just as Hopi was nearly ready to begin riding under saddle, her adopter arrived.
That is often how it goes. Months of training, trust building and preparation lead to that one special moment when a trailer door closes and a new chapter begins. Watching her load up calmly was proof of how far she has come.
A Surprise Adoption from Across the World

In one of the sweetest moments of the week, a supporter from Australia paid Chatty’s adoption fee so he could officially belong to Dr. Nancy.

Chatty had not been feeling well and was referred out for diagnostics. Bloodwork showed infection and painful stomatitis in his mouth. With medication on board, he bounced back quickly. Long term, he may need more advanced dental care, but for now he is eating, comfortable, and very loved.
Rescue is global. Compassion travels far.
Volunteers Make the Difference

Volunteer day brought helping hands and smiling faces. From scrubbing water buckets to grooming mini horses, every task mattered. For some, it was their first time brushing a horse. For the horses, it was attention, care, and connection.
Community is the heartbeat of rescue.
Training for a Brighter Future

Another mare, likely newly blind, began her journey toward becoming rideable. Slow, patient groundwork introduced her to saddle pressure and rein cues. Building confidence now will make her safer, more adoptable, and more secure in her world.
Progress is measured in small, steady steps.
Kissimmee’s Journey Home

Heavy pregnant Kissimmee also found her adopter! With a careful transport plan that includes rest stops, overnight stabling and constant monitoring, she is heading to her new home before foaling.
The decision was thoughtful and intentional. Foaling in her permanent home reduces stress long term and gives her adopter the chance to bond from the very beginning.
Sometimes the best choice is the one that looks ahead.
The Heart Behind the Camera

This episode also shared our media team member who brings these stories to life. The long hours of filming, editing and storytelling are what connect thousands of supporters to the mission every week.
Because rescue does not stop at the barn door. It reaches into homes across the country and around the world.
Why It All Matters

There were adoptions. There were medical procedures. There were volunteers, long drives, pallet mishaps, and tough goodbyes.
That is rescue.

Joy and heartbreak often stand side by side. But through it all, the mission remains the same. Give every animal a chance. Fight for their comfort. Celebrate their victories. And when necessary, offer them peace.
Another month. More lives changed. And the work continues.
