Baby Steps & Bucking Broncos

The sun is out, and that means turnout time! One-week-old Chance and his protective mama, Candy, finally got to stretch their legs in the fresh air. While little Chance is busy figuring out how grass works (those tiny teeth are coming in!), Candy is reminding us that rescue work requires patience. She’s still a bit “striky” and has a long road of training ahead.

Speaking of training, Sheila gave us a bit of a surprise! Despite being ridden at the auction, she wasn’t feeling the saddle this week. After a clear “no thanks” (complete with a few bucks!), the team decided to slow down.
In rescue, we listen to the horse first. Safety always wins!
A Surprise Adoption Gift

In a heartwarming moment, the team receives news that a supporter has paid the adoption fee for Ginger! The adopter even suggests renaming her Darling, a nickname the staff already uses.
With Ginger heading to a loving home and plans to adopt Joey as her companion, it is another reminder of how community support changes animals’ lives.
The Reality of Rescue: When X-Rays Don’t Lie

It’s not all sunshine and grazing at the shelter; this week, we completed intake x-rays on our older auction rescues and the results served as a heavy reminder of why our work is so vital.
Many of these horses, like our 20-year-old grey mare, look decent enough on the outside, but the x-rays reveal a hidden pain, showing they are struggling with eroding coffin bones and severe osteoarthritis.

These are exactly the types of horses that kill buyers would ship to Mexico or Canada without a second thought, viewing them only as cargo rather than living beings. Because of your support, they are here instead…safe, loved, and finally protected from a terrifying end.

Being here also means facing the most difficult part of rescue: acknowledging when the kindest thing we can do is say goodbye. Dr. Nancy and the team emphasize that “quality of life” means making the brave choice to let a horse pass on a good note in a sunny pasture, rather than letting them suffer through a winter their bodies can’t handle.
Rescue isn’t always easy, but by stepping in, we are breaking the cycle of owners walking away when things get tough and ensuring every horse is treated with the dignity they deserve.
Surprises, Spooks &… Night-Shift Bob?

It wouldn’t be a staff meeting without a little humor! Meet Bob, our “night shift” employee (who happens to be a skeleton). Bob helped the team recover some dropped equipment and reminded everyone to double-check their gear.

We also had a “Burn Pile Miracle!” Some of our beautiful metal road signs were accidentally tossed into a scrap heap. Luckily, they were recovered just in time to go back up where they belong.
Bittersweet Surrenders

We welcomed four new horses this week from an owner who, in a truly selfless act, donated her horses, her trailer and all her tack to ensure they were cared for. It’s a reminder that doing the “right thing” for your animal is the ultimate act of love.

We also said a final goodbye to Ace, a Mustang who was returned to us when his chronic foot pain became too much for him to bear. Over time, painful bone deterioration in his feet made it impossible for him to live comfortably.
After consulting with veterinarians, the owner makes the difficult but compassionate decision to let him go peacefully. It is never easy to say goodbye. But choosing what is best for the animal is the most loving choice an owner can make.
The True Meaning of Rescue

This episode shares the full circle philosophy of horse rescue.
Some horses find new families.
Some need training and rehabilitation.
And some simply need kindness and dignity at the end of their lives.
Every horse deserves that chance.
And thanks to the dedication of the team and the support of donors, those chances keep coming!
