Tiny Steps for Chance & Candy
Training sessions continued with Candy and her foal Chance. Candy still struggles with striking and biting when being handled, so staff worked with her safely in the training chute to help her become more comfortable around people. The goal is simple but important: help her learn that people are not a threat.
Meanwhile, Chance is already beginning his early lessons. Staff worked with him on wearing a halter, leading, and picking up his feet. Starting these skills early helps young horses grow into confident, well-handled adults.
Veterinary Care Around the Shelter
In the vet barn, several horses received ongoing care.
Mary had her shoes reset and her hoof growth is looking strong and healthy. Ginger is improving as well, allowing her toe extension to be shortened so her foot can move more naturally.
Glimmer continues treatment for ear plaques. While the process takes time, his ears are improving compared to when treatment first began.
Unfortunately, during an exam on Hawaii, veterinarians discovered rapidly developing melanomas. Gray horses are prone to this condition but the quick growth raises concern that the disease may be spreading internally. The team will continue to monitor him closely and keep him comfortable.
Going Global: Brazil & The Navajo Nation
Horse rescue doesn’t stop at our fence line. We recently sat down for a fascinating Zoom meeting with a rescue in Brazil. Through an interpreter, Dr. Nancy helped troubleshoot nutrition issues and colic prevention.
It’s heartbreaking to hear that horses there are often still viewed only as property, but we were honored to send emergency funds to help 14 horses in desperate need.
Back on home soil, Team Navajo Nation has officially landed! Tawnee, Jason and the team are in New Mexico for a massive gelding clinic.
We are covering the costs for every stallion that comes in to be gelded, helping to manage the population and improve equine welfare in the community.
Home Sweet Home
Some personal wins to celebrate! Kory is officially the proud owner of a newly titled Mustang, and Whinny successfully loaded into the trailer to head to her forever home.
Plus, Cowboy got a much-needed “functional” body clip to beat the 80-degree heat, though he immediately celebrated by rolling in the biggest mud puddle he could find. Typical!
Looking Ahead
As the week wrapped up, the team packed supplies and began traveling to New Mexico to begin work with the upcoming clinic.
Whether it’s training young horses, providing medical care, or supporting equine welfare programs across the world, the mission remains the same: helping horses and giving them the care and second chances they deserve!
