Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E16

Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is a whirlwind of grit, grace, and second chances. This week, we balanced the high-energy celebrations of a milestone birthday with the patient, often difficult work of rehabilitating horses that the world almost gave up on.
From the Navajo Nation to the training pen, here is what is happening on the front lines of horse rescue!

A Sweet Surprise After Hard Work

After returning from impactful outreach work on the Navajo Nation, Tawnee walked into a surprise she didn’t expect, a belated birthday celebration from the team!
Vegan cupcakes, punch and a table full of treats turned a normal day at the rescue into a moment of appreciation.

The work in horse rescue is demanding and often emotional, so small celebrations like this matter. They remind the team that while the mission is serious, the people behind it are a family.
But as always, the celebration didn’t last long, as the horses were waiting.
Training Spotlight: The Breakthrough with Amethyst
Training a Mustang is all about reading the room. Amethyst, one of our January auction rescues, reminded us that progress is rarely a straight line. Last week, she would not even walk through a standard gate without us dismantling the panels.

With patience and air petting, Amethyst finally walked through the gate calmly this week. In a massive safety milestone for a horse that recently reverted to her feral roots, she even picked up her back feet for the first time.
Farrier Day: The Dumpster Fire & the Babies

When the farrier arrives, the real work begins. We tackled ten horses in one session, ranging from easy wins to sedation-required cases. One standout was Pam, a poor guy who arrived with overgrown hooves described as a dumpster fire.

With some heavy-duty trimming and medicinal clay to fight deep infection, he is finally on the path to walking pain-free. Our new baby from Colorado, Amelia, also showed us a boxy hoof growth pattern, which is something even the pros find unusual.
Facing the Scary Stuff with Cora

Cora is a fearful soul who sees monsters in everyday objects. This week, we faced the ultimate villains: pool noodles. It started with her blowing through obstacles in a panic, but by the end of the session, Cora was navigating the noodle curtain and the moving teeter-totter with newfound bravery.
It is a slow process of building trust, but we are not giving up on her.
A Bitter-Sweet Goodbye

We have some amazing news to share! Chance and Candy are heading to a new partner shelter where they will be joining another foal so Chance can grow up with a friend his own age.
We are heading out tomorrow to help their new handlers transition into Candy’s specific training needs and we can’t wait to see them thrive.
The Real Story of Rescue

From birthday cupcakes to medical treatments, training breakthroughs to new beginnings, this episode captures what rescue work really looks like.
It’s messy.
It’s emotional.
And it’s incredibly rewarding.

Because every calm step through a gate, every healed hoof and every horse that finds a home proves one thing:
Second chances save lives.
