Benjamin’s Battle

Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E19

Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is never predictable, but this week really kept us on our toes. From medical mysteries to a sudden “water-pocalypse,” our team (and our incredible residents) showed exactly what it means to be resilient.

Ginger’s Big Step & Benjamin’s Battle

Our sweet Ginger reached a massive milestone this week. After saying goodbye to her cast, she finally got her first day out in an actual pasture!

Watching her explore the “big world” was pure magic, though she definitely had a little too much fun, those bucks and tail-flips had us checking the clock to make sure she didn’t overdo it. Behave yourself, Ginger!

On the tougher side of things, we’ve been keeping a very close eye on Little Benjamin. He’s been struggling with a persistent fever and a mysterious swelling on his neck. After some nervous waiting, the abscess finally “declared itself.”

It was a rough procedure and Dr. Nancy discovered some damaged muscle, but we are so relieved to have it drained and flushed. He’s on the road to recovery with plenty of antibiotics and TLC.

The Great Water Crisis

Just when we thought the day was going smoothly, the water at the main facility completely cut out. With 28 horses relying on automatic waterers, we had to act fast!

While the staff scrambled to reshuffle horses to pastures with backup tanks, Keith and Jason went into full “MacGyver” mode. They decided to connect our two separate wells into one massive, pressurized system.

Not only did they fix the immediate electrical issue, but now, if one pump fails, the other can pick up the slack. Crisis averted and the horses (and our staff!) are very happy to have the faucets flowing again.

A Tale of Two Makeovers

We had some serious glow-ups this week, starting with Cosmos the poodle cross. He arrived so matted he could barely see, but after a trip to the professional groomers, he is a brand-new man!

He even sports a dapper bandana and a signature “smile” that melts everyone’s heart.

Then there was Amelia. Last time we worked with her, she was a ball of nerves. This week? She was a total rockstar.

She retained all her training, stayed relaxed during leading, and even let us work with the halter outside of the chute. Remember the golden rule: always leave your horse first so they stay focused on you!

The Ultimate Happy Ending

We couldn’t have asked for a better finish to the week. An adopter came by to look at our boxer/red heeler mix puppies. She took one look at the litter and realized she just couldn’t leave anyone behind.

In an amazing act of kindness, she adopted all three puppies! Aramis, Brindy and Blue are heading to their forever home together.

It’s moments like these—the successful surgeries, the fixed pipes and the triple adoptions, that make every long day worth it!
