Prince: The Seven-Year-Old Fighter
The week started with a heavy case that truly tested our hearts. Prince, a young and spirited gelding, arrived with a severe, contaminated tendon injury that looked incredibly grim on paper. In fact, his previous prognosis was so grave that euthanasia had already been recommended.
However, when he stepped off the trailer, our team witnessed something miraculous: despite a 60% tendon tear, he was fully weight-bearing and remarkably sound for his condition.
Seeing that spark in him, Dr. Nancy and Dr. Lydia jumped into action with advanced medical interventions to give him a fighting chance. They performed an Intravenous Regional Limb Perfusion, which involves using a tourniquet to deliver high concentrations of antibiotics directly to the infected site.
They also utilized our “DMSO Secret” by mixing a specialized carrier agent with antibiotics to pull the medication deep into the surrounding tissue and fight off the threat of sepsis.
While we are cautiously optimistic, we aren’t in the clear just yet. Prince faces at least another year of careful rehabilitation, but this absolute sweetheart of a horse now has an entire community rooting for his recovery and a future filled with green pastures.
Tiny Patients, Big Hearts
It wasn’t all about the horses this week! We welcomed Dr. Mary Chavez for a working interview. She jumped right into the fray, helping us spay and neuter several cats and dogs to get them ready for their forever homes.
Two little guys, Bundy and Frederick, aced their surgeries using the “auto-ligation” technique. Despite being tiny, they woke up feeling like “big men” and are now one step closer to finding their families.
The Auction: A Race Against the Clock
Auction day is always the most intense part of our month. Our team placed their prediction on how many lives we could save, but the reality exceeded our expectations.
The Power of 34: Thanks to your donations, we rescued 34 horses in a single night!
Alongside our friends at Christian Farms and Outlaw Equine, a total of 36 horses were pulled from the slaughter pipeline.
The Heartbreaking Reality
The reality was heartbreaking. Many of these horses were elderly, severely lame, or suffering from long-term neglect. Some had been passed from auction to auction, their conditions worsening with each stop.
For several, rescue didn’t mean recovery, it meant something just as important: a peaceful, pain-free goodbye.
In total, 12 horses were given the last act of kindness on-site or shortly after arrival at the shelter. These were the hardest moments… choosing compassion over prolonging suffering.
The team ensured each horse’s final moments were filled with calm, care, and kindness.
Why We Do It
As the sun rose on Wednesday morning, our trailers were loaded, our spirits were tired, but our hearts were full. Thirty-four horses are now safe, warm, and finally known by their names instead of just a number on a hip tag.

This rescue was exhausting… physically, emotionally and mentally. But it was also a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Because every horse deserves a chance.
And when a second chance isn’t possible, they deserve a humane and loving goodbye.
