Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E40

What an incredible week at Horse Plus Humane Society! While a few of our familiar faces took a much-needed soul-generating vacation, the shelter didn’t miss a beat.
We had everything from high-speed internet drama and “puppy burritos” to international rescue missions. It’s a beautiful reminder that whether we’re in the barn at home or exploring a tropical island, our hearts and our mission are always with the animals.

International Rescue: The Aruba Donkey Sanctuary

Even on vacation, Tawnee can’t stop being a hero! The team visited the Donkey Sanctuary Aruba, an amazing organization that cares for 126 donkeys descended from the island’s original work animals.
We met Desiree, who told us the heartbreaking story of BM BM, the sanctuary’s first rescue, and Camino, a popular donkey who thrives even after a leg amputation.

The coolest part? Tawnee couldn’t help herself and helped the sanctuary submit a grant through our Full Circle of Life program!

We were also able to provide a last act of kindness grant to help an elderly donkey in pain, proving that our mission to end suffering truly has no borders.
Puppy Spa Day & Big Mule Returns

The “cute meter” was off the charts this week! All our new puppies got a long-overdue spa day. We even had a “puppy burrito” situation after Kurt and Poseidon got their baths to scrub off the brown “mystery stains” from playing in the pasture.
Once they were clean, they headed straight for their intakes, getting microchipped and vaccinated to be one step closer to their forever homes.

Speaking of forever homes, we had a bittersweet full-circle moment. Two gorgeous, humongous mules were returned to us because their adopters were moving out of state.
We are so happy to have these “big juicy” beauties back and can’t wait to find them a spectacular new home where they can continue to be the stars of the show.
Emergency Vet Run: Sir Galahad’s Scare

It wasn’t all puppy baths and vacations… we had a serious medical emergency with Sir Galahad. One of our team members noticed him “pouring snot” that was mixed with food, a classic and terrifying sign of choke.
He was also showing signs of colic, so we rushed him to the vet. After passing a tube to clear the blockage and getting his teeth floated, Galahad is back and recovering! He’ll be on a “soaked feed” diet for a while to make sure he stays safe and healthy.
Meeting our New Trainer: LC!

We are so excited to officially introduce you to LC, our new horse trainer! She’s been with us for three months now and has been doing a phenomenal job with horses like Midnight.
LC’s passion is all about patience and showing these animals that people “aren’t so bad all the time.” She spends her days helping our rescues become “good citizens” so they are perfectly set up for their second chances.
Welcome to the family, LC!
Repairs, Grants & “Dad Jokes”

Even while the office internet was “popping in and out” and driving our staff absolutely crazy, the vital work at the shelter never slowed down for a second.
Kory tackled some essential trailer TLC by replacing a worn tire and fixing a cross-threaded lug nut to ensure our rescues stay safe on the road, while Dawn stayed busy processing new grant applications pouring in from New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and right here in Tennessee.

We also celebrated a fun milestone for TC the cat, who officially finished his intake and has embraced his new role as our newest “wild” barn cat.

Whether it’s checking trailer tires, vaccinating donkeys or cleaning cat and dog spaces, the team’s dedication shows that animal rescue is as much about consistency and love as it is about big rescues.
Thank you so much for following along and for your incredible support… every single donation and order ensures we can keep these life-saving stories going!
