Patch’s Path

One of the most moving moments this week featured Patch, a stunning horse from our September buyout. Despite being completely blind, Patch proved that trust is a powerful guide. Our trainers got him under saddle and he was a total rockstar!

He responds to the slightest shift in body weight and follows his rider’s lead with zero hesitation. Patch is living proof that “special needs” doesn’t mean “limited capability”, he just needs a partner who speaks his language.
Emergency Eye Care for Dino

The week took a serious turn when Troy noticed Dino was struggling with a severely swollen eye and heavy discharge. We jumped into action immediately.
Following Dr. Lydia’s expert advice, we treated what appeared to be a significant corneal ulcer using a fascinating procedure: we drew Dino’s own blood, spun it down to create a healing serum and administered it directly into his eye along with anti-inflammatories.
It’s a specialized process but seeing Dino start to feel relief makes every extra step worth it.
Getting Ahead of the Game in Quarantine

With expert evaluator Todd headed our way, the team worked hard to stay ahead of schedule by moving the September buyout horses down to the main facility for their training evaluations and finishing up boosters for the October group.
Donkeys Opie and Pakito got special attention for their foot care and basic ground training.

We are also focusing heavily on Sterling and Arwin, who are both currently struggling with major nerves and skittishness. It is clear from their behavior that they have dealt with some rough handling in their past, but we are fully committed to putting in the time necessary to show them that human hands can finally be kind.
Our Vet Team is Growing!

We’ve been keeping a major secret and we are absolutely thrilled to finally let it out! After months of searching for the perfect fit for our mission, we aren’t just hiring one veterinarian… we’re actually hiring two!
First, after an incredible working interview that blew us all away, Dr. Gina is officially joining the Horse Plus team. To make things even better, Dr. Lydia, the veterinarian who has been our trusted right hand for years is finally coming on board full-time!

Moving from having no full-time vet to having two of the best in the business is an absolute game-changer for our organization. This expansion means we can host more spay and neuter clinics, perform faster dental procedures and provide the kind of in-depth specialized care that every rescue deserves the moment they walk through our gates.
We truly feel beyond blessed!
Birthday Wishes & Puppy Piles

The week ended on a high note with a birthday celebration for Kory! We are so incredibly lucky to have Kory on our team as his tireless work ethic and genuine heart for these animals make a world of difference every single day.
We truly appreciate everything he does to keep the wheels turning and the horses happy, and we hope his birthday was as wonderful as he is!

The “puppy pile” for our six newest rescues provided the perfect dose of joy to wrap up the week. These little ones have been dewormed and are now headed to their foster homes to get some extra TLC while they get ready for adoption.
20 Years of Thankfulness

As we look back on our 20th anniversary, the whole team took a moment to share what we’re grateful for. From Jason and Tawnee reflecting on the shelter’s humble beginnings to our newest staff members finding “friendly faces” from high school, the theme was clear: Community.
We are so thankful for the donors who have fueled 20 years of rescue and for the dedicated staff who treat every animal like family!
Thank you for being part of this 20-year journey. With two new vets and a team this dedicated, the next 20 years are going to be legendary!

Every day at Horse Plus Humane Society is full of challenges, compassion and victories… big and small. From rehabilitating blind horses to training wild mini mules, every hoof and paw gets the care it deserves thanks to our dedicated team and supporters.
