Coming back from a tropical vacation is always a bit of a shock but for the team at Horse Plus Humane Society, the transition from 80-degree Aruba beaches to the cold reality of rescue work was instantaneous.
While our souls were recharged, our mission didn’t wait. We hit the ground running during a massive rescue week, navigating legal hurdles, welcoming new survivors and facing some of the toughest medical calls we’ve seen in months!

Hoop Jumping & Legal Hurdles
Even while we were away, the battle for our right to rescue continued. We are still working through complex USDA investigations and state requirements following our ban from the local livestock auction.
Currently, we are adhering to a 60-day hold for all rescues to remain in compliance while we wait for a final word on our dealer license status. It’s frustrating to keep adoptable animals in “limbo” but we are jumping through every hoop to ensure we can keep saving lives legally and safely.
The Power of the Buyout Program
Since we can’t be at the auction in person, our Buyout Program has become a literal lifeline for horses that might otherwise slip through the cracks. This week alone, we prepared for twenty new arrivals, allowing owners to bring horses directly to us for their “slaughter price” and intercepting them before they ever enter the stressful, dangerous pipeline of the auction house.
This early intervention is huge because we get these animals before they have to suffer through the dehydration and exhaustion of the auction ring. Among the new survivors is a stunningly sensible horse baby who uses logic instead of panic, making him exactly the kind of horse that will eventually be a perfect partner.
Of course, the work isn’t without its hurdles, as we have already triaged cases of severe arthritis and suspected DSLD, a heartbreaking condition that often leads to horses being discarded by their previous owners.
A Hard “Welcome Home” for Fiesta
The most heart-wrenching moment of the week happened right after we returned when Fiesta, one of our spirited residents, tried to jump a panel and got herself severely hung up!
We arrived to find a scene of blood and a horse whose legs had “fallen asleep” from the trauma but our team jumped into immediate action to save her. We started with warm hydrotherapy, giving her a bath to bring her body temperature back up and stimulate vital blood flow then utilized our specialized lift sling to help her find her footing while her nerves slowly woke back up.
Under the careful guidance of Dr. Lydia, she also received fluids, electrolytes and a tetanus antitoxin to stabilize her system. While Fiesta is young and strong, she faces at least an eight-week recovery journey but we remain hopeful for her future.
She even had a brief, if slightly dramatic, visit from her blind mini-friend, Dolly, to keep her spirits up during this difficult time!
Celebrating Milestones & New Friends
Despite the heavy lifting and emotional challenges of the week, there were still plenty of smiles to go around the shelter. We absolutely loved meeting some of our super-fans who stopped by and even though it wasn’t a scheduled volunteer day, they jumped right in to help us rake the riding arena.
Our small animal residents got in on the fun too as our eight shelter cats enjoyed a festive Thanksgiving feast while the kitten room was finally scrubbed clean and declared chaos-free.
To top it all off, we celebrated a major adoption success when Brue headed off to her forever home with a dedicated adopter who drove all the way from Florida just to pick her up before the holiday!
