This week’s episode of Horse Shelter Heroes was an absolute whirlwind of rescue, recovery and exciting milestones. From the operating table to the open road, our team has been working overtime to ensure every animal whether they have hooves or whiskers gets the “Plus” in Horse Plus Humane Society.

A “Freedom Journey” for Seven Little Paws
The energy was high as we loaded up seven adorable lab-mix puppies! These sweet babies are heading off to Freedom’s Journey in Columbia.
Transfers like these are vital as they allow us to move animals to areas where they have the best chance of finding forever homes quickly, freeing up space for the next rescue in need.
The Cat’s Meow: Surgery Day
It wasn’t just about the dogs this week! Our incredible vet team, including Dr. Lydia and Dr. Gina, powered through a marathon “Spay and Neuter” session for our many feline residents to get them one step closer to their forever homes.
Safety is always our top priority so we took extra time to monitor one handsome fellow showing signs of a viral respiratory issue. Because shelter life can be stressful on a kitty’s immune system, we carefully weighed the risks to ensure he was strong enough for the procedure.
In the end, it was a massive success: six happy, healthy cats are now officially ready for adoption and are spending their days lounging in our outdoor colony while they wait for you to stop by and fall in love!
On the Scene: Welfare Checks & Hidden Truths
While our days are often filled with joy, some moments remind us exactly why our mission is so critical. Our lead rescuer, Kory, headed out this week for a welfare check on several horses reported to be suffering from mistreatment.
During the visit, we spotted a major red flag: horses wearing heavy blankets despite the 60-degree weather. This is a heartbreakingly common tactic used by owners to hide extreme emaciation and keep the public from seeing just how thin the animals have become.
We are currently documenting every detail and gathering evidence to build a formal case, ensuring these horses receive the legal intervention and life-saving care they deserve.
Medical Mysteries Solved
Our veterinary team put on their detective hats this week to solve some puzzling medical mysteries for our residents. Poor Fiesta had been dealing with persistent, chronic drainage on her belly, but once she was safely sedated, Dr. Lydia uncovered the culprit: old, non-absorbable sutures left behind from a past injury.
We were able to clear those out and she is already acting like a brand-new horse!
Meanwhile, sweet Clementine was struggling with an infection at her microchip site but thanks to some antimicrobial ointment and a whole lot of TLC, she is officially on the mend.
We also gave Meadow the stray a total transformation. She arrived with massive, painful mats that were so tight they were actually suffocating her skin and causing an infection.
After a much-needed shave and a course of antibiotics, Meadow has finally found relief and is looking as fabulous as she feels!
Our First International Adoption?
We had some very special guests drive all the way from Ontario, Canada! They are looking for a first horse for their 13-year-old granddaughter. They spent time with Bowie and Pilgrim, testing their “trailering” skills and they passed with flying colors!
It looks like one of our boys might be headed for a life in the Great North!
New Beginnings for Godiva
One of the highlights was seeing Godiva, now renamed Persephone, head off to her new home. Her new mom, Sam, fell in love after a perfect test ride.
Persephone is trading the shelter for a massive field and a life as a beloved trail horse. Happy trails, girl!
