Some weeks at Horse Plus Humane Society carry everything at once: celebration, heartbreak, urgency and hope.
This episode of Horse Shelter Heroes begins with a meaningful moment as Horse Plus honors Bob Barker’s extraordinary legacy through a $100,000 estate gift that will help expand lifesaving work for animals in the community. But while that celebration was unfolding, the team was also preparing for a massive Buy-Out rescue mission that would bring in dozens of horses needing immediate care.
What followed was an emotional reminder of why this work matters so much.

Honoring Bob Barker’s Legacy

We were absolutely floored to learn that Horse Plus Humane Society was included in the estate of the legendary Bob Barker. To honor his lifelong commitment to animal welfare, we held a check dedication ceremony for a staggering $100,000 donation.
With these funds, we are moving forward with a brand-new Spay and Neuter Clinic, ensuring that the pet population in our community stays healthy and controlled.
We were even joined by the Lewis County Mayor and our friends from The Elephant Sanctuary to celebrate this massive milestone!
A Buy-Out Rescue Mission Begins
The very next day, everything shifted into high gear. What started as an estimate quickly turned into reality as 38 horses arrived and the team worked nonstop to prepare quarantine, organize supplies and handle intake.
As the horses arrived, it became clear just how serious many of their conditions were. Some came in with advanced injuries, severe neglect, untreated pain, lice, dental disease, heart problems and chronic laminitis.
Every horse was carefully evaluated, triaged and given the care they needed.
More Than Just Horses
Remember, the “Plus” in our name truly stands for everyone else! Beyond our equine friends, we recently opened our hearts to a very special guest: a sweet, heavily pregnant dog named Coco.
Our vet team confirmed she is officially “about to pop,” with X-rays revealing at least six tiny spines ready to make their debut. To make sure she has the quiet environment she needs, she’s heading straight to a cozy foster home where she can nest in comfort and raise her puppies in peace.

By the end of just a day and a half, the team had worked through every horse from the Buy-Out rescue mission. It was a huge effort, made possible only through donor support, dedicated staff and a commitment to showing up for animals in their darkest moments.
This episode is a powerful picture of what rescue really looks like. It is honoring legacies, making impossible decisions, fighting for every life that can be saved and never turning away from the suffering that others ignore.
