Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E16

It’s been a week of major transformations here at Horse Plus Humane Society! From surgical miracles to the pitter-patter of new hooves moving out of quarantine, the energy at the shelter is electric.
Whether we are scrubbing mud off a rescue or celebrating a “fastest ever” adoption, every moment is a step toward a better life for these animals!

Vet Corner: Eye Care & Mystery Cases
Our medical team is always on their toes and this week was no exception!

Little mini horse Coco had a successful lid margin resection. Because of a condition called entropion (where the lid rolls inward), her lashes were causing constant pain. Thanks to some expert nerve blocks and a quick dental float, she’s waking up feeling like a brand-new mini!

Atlas, one of our older residents, has been a bit of a puzzle. Despite multiple rounds of antibiotics for a face wound and a dedicated refeeding plan, he isn’t gaining weight as we’d hoped. We are diving deep into the anatomy books and keeping him close in the hospital to ensure he stays comfortable.

Fernando gave us a scare with a 105.2°F fever! After some quick blood work and a refreshing “cool-down” bath, his temp dropped back toward the normal range. He’s now relaxing in a stall with a fan and his new buddy, Huey.
Spa Day for the Youngsters

Now that the weather is finally warming up, it’s officially Bath Season! Kory took advantage of the sunshine to give several young horses their very first baths.
Three-year-old Tany was the star of the show! She handled the water like a pro, trading her winter mud for a clean, “curly” look.
Farrier Feats: The “Salad Bowl” Shoe

Our farrier, Elijah, had his hands full with some challenging hoof cases. Jethro got some much-needed front shoes to protect his flat feet, but Huey’s case was a bit more complex.

Huey has extremely thin soles and hoof walls. Elijah attempted a specialized “Salad Bowl” shoe (a steel shoe twisted at an angle to relieve pressure) but Huey’s feet were too delicate for nails. Instead, we used specialized casting material to provide support.
We’re now looking into “glue-on” options to keep this five-year-old moving comfortably!
A Day Full of Firsts & Happy Endings
There is nothing we love more than seeing a trailer pull out with a happy horse inside!

In what might be the “Fastest Adoption of the Year,” Boe the Hackney Pony found his forever home! He’s headed to a friend of the organization to be a companion for another one-eyed mini horse.

After following her online for months, Vanessa’s new family finally met her in person and it was love at first sight. We also shouted a big thank you to Outlaw Equine Rescue & Rehab who stopped by to transfer five of our lovable donkeys to their facility to help them find homes even faster!
Moving Forward Together

The episode ended with transitions and new beginnings, including the transfer of donkeys to a partner rescue where they will have new opportunities for adoption.
Every rescue, every treatment and every adoption is part of a larger story. It is about giving animals a chance, no matter how complicated the journey may be.
If you believe in this work, your support helps make every one of these moments possible!
