Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E22

This week at Horse Plus Humane Society, the energy was high and the stakes were even higher. It was “Buyout Week,” our critical mission to intercept horses before they ever reach the auction or the slaughter pipeline. With a team that was a little short-staffed but a lot determined, we faced one of our biggest intake days yet!
From tiny yearlings to a massive semi-truck arrival, here is the scoop on a day that truly tested our resolve!

57 Lives Saved
We estimated between 40 and 60 horses would arrive, and the final count hit a staggering 57!

We were thrilled to rescue a huge group of roughly 16 yearlings. These youngsters often bounce around the slaughter pipeline because they lack training, so getting them safe now is a massive win.

For only the second time in our history, we intercepted an entire semi-trailer. Every horse on that truck was headed for a heartbreaking end until your support allowed us to say “Yes.”
Triage Under Pressure
With our X-ray equipment still waiting for repairs, our veterinary team had to rely on their expert eyes, hands and years of experience to triage the new arrivals.

Not every story had a happy ending. We met a tiny donkey and a sweet stallion with catastrophic, long-term fractures that had been left untreated for months. In these cases, the “last act of kindness” was the only way to end their unimaginable suffering.

Even in the middle of crisis, there were reasons to feel hopeful.
We welcomed Toby, a handsome owner surrender with founder that we are ready to manage!
A Quack-tastic Surprise
In the middle of the horse chaos, a duck named Quackers was surrendered to the shelter!

We set up a dedicated pool in the treatment room so she could clean her feathers and splash around.
Fun Fact! Did you know ducks happily eat cat food? Quackers certainly does! She is currently living her best life, proving the “Plus” in Horse Plus Humane Society covers everyone.
Fueling the Front Lines

Rescue work is physically and emotionally draining. We want to send a huge thank you to the anonymous donor who provided a “Pizza and Ice Cream” fund for the staff! Being able to have a hot meal delivered during a 57-horse intake makes a world of difference!
Community Milestones

We finally hung the banners for our upcoming Small Animal Spay & Neuter Clinic! This project is inspired by the legacy of Bob Barker and we can’t wait to provide this vital service to our local community to help control the pet overpopulation crisis.
Join Our Mission
Our “Buyout Program” is growing fast, but we can’t keep up without you.

Every single horse rescued from the pipeline requires essential bloodwork, microchips and immediate medical care to start their journey toward a better life. You can donate and help us fund these life-saving interventions today!

Beyond financial support, we are also looking for passionate people to join our growing family on the ground. We are currently searching for a Registered Veterinary Technician who wants to work on the front lines of rescue.
If you have the skills and a heart for helping animals in their most vulnerable moments, we would love for you to reach out to us!
Thank you for standing with us. Whether it’s a 2,000-pound Belgian or a single lucky duck, every life matters!
