Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E23

Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is never slow, but this week was a total whirlwind! Between massive infrastructure upgrades, heartwarming adoptions and making history at a protest, our team has been running on passion (and a little bit of sugar thanks to some volunteer snacks!).
Here is the breakdown of the incredible progress we made together.

Progress You Can See (and Feel!)

We are officially one step closer to the dream! The rough electrical inspection is happening at our new Education Center. Once that passes, we will finally have power for fans, lights, and the ultimate luxury: air conditioning.
At the same time, we have crews on-site running lines for our new staff housing and climate-controlled intake barn. This isn’t just about comfort, it’s about making sure our team can provide the best care possible, even in the middle of a Tennessee heatwave or a winter storm.
A Brave Day for Baby Dolly

Our tiny miracle, Baby Dolly, had a big day in the vet barn. Born to an emaciated mare with health struggles from the start, Dolly has been a fighter. To get to the bottom of some recurring joint swelling, the team performed a sterile joint tap under general anesthesia.

It’s a risky procedure for such a little one, but she handled it like a champ! Her initial blood work looks better than ever, and while we wait for culture results, we are cautiously optimistic.
A huge thank you to our donors for making this high-level medical care possible for babies like her.
Bell Ringing for New Beginnings
We had a fantastic week for adoptions! The bell was ringing non-stop as some special animals found their forever families.

Sundance is headed home to be a calm companion for a lonely mare.

Lance and Carolina were adopted as a pair by a family ready to give them a lush pasture and lots of love!

Gustavo, who has been working hard on his confidence, finally found his person!

Silhouette, a young pony with visual impairment, is headed to New York where she’ll see a specialist who might be able to restore her sight.
We are profoundly grateful to the donors who fund their recovery and the adopters who open their hearts, as you are the true heroes making these beautiful new lives possible!
Standing Up for Horses
The mission doesn’t stop at the shelter gates.

This week was also about advocacy. We stood with organizations from across the US and Canada to protest the “Big Lick”, the inhumane practice of soring and stacking Tennessee Walking Horses.

For the first time ever, we took our message inside the show, silently holding our signs at the ringside. It was an emotional day, but with new USDA rulings on the horizon, we are hopeful that this is the final year these horses will have to endure such abuse!
