Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E28

Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is a whirlwind of medical miracles, emotional goodbyes, and the relentless pursuit of “saying yes” to horses in need. This week was no exception!
From surgical breakthroughs to a massive new arrival of 21 animals, our team has been running on coffee, passion, and plenty of hay.

Sapphire’s Big Win

Our brave girl Sapphire continues to defy the odds! During her latest bandage change, the vet team was thrilled to see that a massive flap of skin, one we feared would die off, has actually adhered and is surviving.
While she still faces a long road and more surgery to manage “proud flesh” (overactive granulation tissue), her risk of sepsis has plummeted. Bonus: we discovered she’s actually only 2 years old!
This youngster has her whole life ahead of her.
High-Tech Healing

Exciting news for our medical team! Thanks to your incredible donations, we’ve approved the purchase of a new, state-of-the-art wireless ultrasound. Unlike our old, bulky equipment, this handheld device syncs right to an iPad.
This means we can get crystal-clear images of soft tissue injuries and accurate pregnancy checks right in the field or in quarantine, literally life-saving technology for horses coming out of the slaughter pipeline.
New Beginnings & Bittersweet Moments
The dust never settles in quarantine!

The Texas 21! We just took in a massive shipment of 21 horses and donkeys from Texas.

Sadly, we encountered a case of the mysterious “donkey lung disease.” It’s a devastating respiratory collapse that hits quickly. To prevent suffering, we had to provide one sweet donkey with a peaceful goodbye, reminding us why our mission for better diagnostics is so vital.
Training & Happy Tails

It’s not all bandages and medicine! Caleb has been busy working with Goo (our one-eared “unicorn”) and Crixus on their riding evaluations.

We’re also tackling “buddy sour” behavior with some specialized exercises to ensure our rescues are well-adjusted for their future owners. Speaking of owners, a huge shoutout to Quackers and Ruger, who both headed off to their forever homes this week!
Even on the Hard Days, the Mission Continues

From emergency care to unexpected setbacks including a staff member involved in a serious vehicle accident, the day never slowed down. Through it all, the team kept going.
Because that’s what rescue is. Showing up, no matter what.
Every horse that arrives gets a chance. Every life is evaluated with care, compassion, and respect.
And none of it happens without your support.

Every rescue, every surgery, every second chance is made possible by people who care.
Your support allows us to say yes… to the next horse, the next emergency, the next life that needs saving.
If you believe in this mission, please consider donating today.
Together, we can keep showing up for them.
