Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E31
Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is many things, but “slow” is never one of them! Our latest episode of Horse Shelter Heroes was a whirlwind of activity, proving that it truly takes a village (and a lot of coffee) to keep this rescue running.

Growing Pains & New Gains
The air was filled with the hum of machinery as we tackled some much-needed growth. Between laying gravel and installing new septic systems for our intake barn, the property is finally evolving to meet the needs of the animals we serve.
Even Jason got in on the action, rolling up his sleeves to handle the electrical work for our new staff housing and saving the shelter thousands of dollars in the process.
It is all part of the grit and determination that keeps our gates open.
Triple Crown of Adoptions
The best part of our job? Seeing trailers pull out with happy horses and even happier families. We had a banner day with 3 successful adoption appointments!
We cheered as Little John and Wahkon finally loaded onto their trailer after a brief, rebellious game of “jump the fence.”
We also celebrated sweet Gailleeo finding her person and Squatch the mini-horse heading off to become a cherished grandkids’ pony.
Perhaps the most touching moment was watching Dixie connect with 11-year-old Madeline. Dixie is the definition of a “grandma horse,” and seeing her find a family to love her in her golden years is exactly why we do what we do.
Even Cotton the kitten managed to sneak into a forever home!
The Medical Front
Rescue work isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Our vet team has been working overtime!
Buttercup, this June buyout survivor is struggling with lameness and a fractured fibula. We’re performing deep diagnostics to get her back on her feet.
Sapphire, the brave mare who fell through a trailer floor is showing progress! We’re back to a bandaging routine to keep her wounds moist and healing.
Sadly, we had to make the toughest decision for Chip. Between severe internal organ changes and chronic pain, the kindest act we could offer him was peace.
He will be deeply missed by the whole team.
Sweet Treats & Bitter Farewells
To keep our spirits up, we received a massive delivery of homemade cookies from a wonderful supporter named Christina. Between the butterscotch and the pecan coconut, the team was fueled and ready to go!
We are so incredibly grateful to Christina for the kindness and effort she put into baking those delicious cookies which truly brightened our busy week.
We also said a temporary goodbye to one of our amazing team members heading back to school. We’re so proud of the work she’s done and can’t wait to see her back next summer!
The Best Part: New Beginnings
This episode is a powerful snapshot of rescue life… messy, emotional, unpredictable and incredibly rewarding.
For every emergency, there’s a success story.
For every hard decision, there’s a life changed.
