Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E32
At Horse Plus Humane Society, every day begins with a plan but rescue work has a way of filling the schedule faster than anyone expects. In this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes, the team starts the morning with a long list of medical priorities including castrations, vaccine boosters, pregnancy checks, dental work, and training evaluations.

The Vet Suite: Tough Choices & High Stakes
Our medical team, led by Dr. Gina and Dr. Lydia, hit the ground running with a marathon of castrations. While surgeries for youngsters like Kenzo went smoothly, older boys like Jack who’s (estimated at 20 years old, remind us how risky anesthesia can be.
Jack had a bit of a rocky recovery due to some old scarring on his leg, but after some extra padding, corn syrup for a sugar boost and plenty of TLC, we are doing everything we can to keep him comfortable.
Sadly, we also had to say goodbye to a legend. Glimmer, our beautiful Tennessee Walking Horse who survived the horrors of the “Big Lick” industry, began struggling significantly with his breathing. Between chronic lung inflammation and failing organs, the heat and humidity became too much.
We made the heartbreaking decision to offer him the last act of kindness. Glimmer wasn’t just a horse, he was a symbol of the advocacy work we do to end animal abuse.
Rest easy, sweet boy.
The “Honey” Rescue: Nine Lives, Nine Donkeys
We received an urgent call from the Sheriff’s department about a group of neglected donkeys. The rescue mission was a success, bringing nine new long-eared friends to the shelter!
Most arrived with severe “slipper hooves” from extreme neglect but one little Jenny named Honey stole our hearts and broke them at the same time.
Honey was in the worst shape, separated from the group and covered in deep, infected wounds from being attacked by a Jack. She is currently fighting systemic infections and organ stress.
While it is still “touch and go,” she is finally hydrated, safe, and starting to realize that humans can be kind.

It wasn’t all heavy hearts this week. The adoption trail was busy!
Crixus found his perfect match! He’s heading to a massive 350-acre pasture where he’ll be reunited with his old stablemate.
The Kitten Takeover! Six of our adorable kittens were transported to PetSmart to find their families. Plus, Twix found his people right here at the shelter!
New Arrivals! We also welcomed a surrendered pig who is busy exploring his new stall and two new horses.
A Huge Shoutout!
A massive thank you to Parman Tractor and Equipment for the incredible donation of a new tractor! This machine is a game-changer for us, making it so much easier to deliver nutritious food to our rescues.
We also want to thank our student shadow, Aniya, who spent the day learning the ropes of rescue medicine with us!
