Welcome Back, Hailey!
The energy at the shelter instantly skyrocketed this week because our very own Hailey is back after a long, two-week absence. The crew definitely felt the loss while she was gone especially when it came to wrangling a few loose ponies. Not only did Haley bring her top-tier horse skills back to the barn but she also brought the warm weather with her.
Beyond the horses, Hailey immediately got to work helping out with our feline friends, picking up carriers for cats heading out to pet stores for adoption!
Vet Checks, New Beginnings & Breakthroughs
It’s been a busy medical and evaluation week at Horse Plus Humane Society. Here is the latest scoop on our amazing residents!
Jafar, a recently castrated four year old formerly aggressive stallion, continued his recovery while the veterinary team is monitoring his hormones as they settle down and rechecking some blood work for severe anemia that was discovered during his castration.
Despite his rough start, everyone is hopeful he will continue settling into life as a gelding and eventually thrive around other horses.
Blackberry officially completed quarantine and moved into a new pasture with other horses after healing beautifully from her eye surgery. Her recovery has been incredible to watch and the team was excited to see her finally leave isolation behind.
The gentling program had another proud moment when Donnelly, a reservation horse with almost no previous handling, worked calmly with beginner volunteer Lynn. Watching him allow haltering, hoof handling and basic groundwork after only limited training showed just how much patience and kindness can accomplish.
Why We Take in the “Unwanted”
We often get asked: “Why does Horse Plus get so many blind or medically challenged horses?”
Unlike livestock, horses are companion animals, much like our dogs and cats. Sadly, when they develop chronic conditions, many get dumped. We believe every single horse deserves to know love and kindness in their final chapters whether they are adoptable or not.
To help horses nationwide, Horse Plus Humane Society offers a Last Act of Kindness Grant. If an owner in Tennessee or another state has a critically ill horse they cannot afford to care for, this grant funds a local veterinarian to provide a peaceful, dignified end.
We want to prevent suffering wherever we can.
The Goat Trio Gets an Upgrade
Our three beloved resident goats, a mama and her two castrated sons, finally moved out of the vet barn stalls and into their very own outdoor space. They spent the day soaking up the sunlight, showing off their shedding “beards,” and enjoying their new hay feeder.
They are full of personality and officially up for adoption!
Thank You for Supporting the Mission
Our team paused to reflect on what makes Horse Plus so special. The consensus? It doesn’t feel like work. It feels like family. Everyone is accepted for exactly who they are, working together for the animals we love.
From deep cleaning to moving pastures, it’s been a wild, rewarding week.
