Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E25

The work never stops at Horse Plus Humane Society and this week’s episode of Horse Shelter Heroes is a powerful reminder of why every rescue matters. After an exhausting buyout mission, the team welcomed 37 horses into safety, each one beginning a brand new chapter.
From massive intake days to specialized vet care and heartwarming adoptions, here is what’s been happening at the shelter!
37 Horses Safe at Last

The rescue team spent the day completing medical evaluations, documenting each horse’s condition and making sure every new arrival received the care they needed. While many horses were in better condition than expected, several required immediate veterinary attention for injuries, lameness, skin problems, and other health concerns.

One of the biggest priorities was identifying mares and their foals. With several young horses mixed together after their stressful journey, the team carefully worked to reunite each baby with its rightful mother before moving them into a nursery pasture.
Vet Diaries
The day after a major buyout is always intense, focusing heavily on in-depth medical care. Dr. Jess and the team had their hands full this week!

Our handsome boy Sawyer had his skin staples removed following his cryptorchid surgery. He was a total champ under light sedation and is now officially cleared for small-pasture turnout.

We suspected Carson the mini mule was hiding a couple of testicles but because he wasn’t the biggest fan of being handled, we sedated him to check. Sure enough, he was intact!
We performed a smooth, uneventful castration and he is recovering beautifully.

Rescue work means making the hardest choices for the animals we love. Sadly, one young, severely lethargic yearling who had been ravaged by the harsh conditions of the pipeline took a turn for the worse. To prevent any further suffering, we gave her the last act of kindness and said a peaceful goodbye.
Even on the hardest days, the reward comes from watching rescued horses finally experience safety, freedom, and hope.
Thunder Finds Her Forever Home!

Now for some news that will make your heart burst! Remember Thunder? She is an 11-year-old Standardbred mare who came to us from Texas, deeply traumatized and initially deemed unridable due to her defensive habits.
Our trainer, Trey, put weeks of patient ground work and saddle training into her, teaching her to trust again. This week, an amazing adopter named Amy came to visit. Amy hopped in the saddle and the connection was instant. Thunder proved just how soft, respectful, and sweet she truly is.
The best part? Amy officially adopted her! Thunder’s brand-new journey starts now, and we couldn’t be happier for this beautiful girl.
“Home for the Brave” Adoption Event!

Excitement is building for the upcoming Home for the Brave Adoption Event on July 1 where approved adopters can give rescued horses the loving homes they deserve. Unlike traditional adoptions, all standard adoption fees are waived during the event. Instead, adopters simply make a donation of their choice, helping even more horses find their forever families!
Behind the scenes, the staff has been hard at work grooming, feeding, and training horses to help each one put its best hoof forward.
Expanding Our Hoofprints

Big news on the horizon! We have been working tirelessly down in Florida to get our brand-new facility up and running. Our resident horses there are already loving their new routine, walking themselves right into their stalls for breakfast.

Because this facility was gifted to us without an operating budget, we are launching a Sponsorship Program! By sponsoring a resident horse in Florida, you help fund care for local owner surrenders. These sponsored horses will act as ambassadors, helping volunteers and tour groups learn why horse rescue is so vital!
