The story of Jason and Tawnee starts back in 1993 and Tawnee distinctly remembers the day she met Jason. Tawnee was only 9 years old but she was captivated by this 13-year-old boy named Jason. It was love at first sight for her, completely unaware of the fascinating journey life had in store for them. Jason and Tawnee were married nine years after they first met and together, they would make an extraordinary impact on the world of horses by setting up the largest Horse Welfare Organization - a testament to their shared passion and unwavering commitment. Their story is a beautiful reminder of how love and hard work can inspire significant change.
Tawnee
Tawnee's childhood was surrounded with horses and a myriad of other creatures. Her innate affection towards animals led her to dream of caring for them from a tender age, even constructing a makeshift hospital for bugs from a cardboard box. As she matured, her bond with animals deepened, solidifying her desire to devote her life to their well-being. In Tawnee's youthful years, she got involved with wildlife rescue, but she went a step further, even rescuing a baby buffalo!
Jason
Growing amidst verdant trees and shrubs rather than horses, Jason's family committed their lives to the nurturing of the western United States' wilderness, serving the Forest Service with deep-rooted passion. Their adventurous souls carried them across the nation, fulfilling the needs of the National Forest Service in diverse landscapes. But, when Jason married Tawnee, his life pivoted to an exhilarating journey into a realm teeming with horses and an array of other creatures.
Together
Shortly after their wedding, Jason and Tawnee embarked on a remarkable journey. It began when Tawnee rescued her first horse from an auction and soon after, they established this nonprofit dedicated to aiding horses in need. This compassionate couple invested their time and energy, working tirelessly to save horses from dire circumstances. Little did they know, their humble organization would soon flourish, becoming the largest horse welfare organization worldwide. Their story is a testament to their immense dedication and love for these majestic creatures and each other.
Over 20 Years of Rescuing Horses
The story behind Horse Plus Humane Society is truly captivating, illustrating just how small beginnings can blossom into something remarkable. It all began with Tawnee going to an auction to get one horse, and another and another… Jason put his stone mason skills to work to support the organization. Then came the monumental day when they received a generous $150,000 estate donation, sparking a fresh momentum that hasn't slowed since. This video invites you to accompany them on their journey, tracing their path back to their humble beginnings to the thriving Horse Plus Humane Society we know today.
A Thriving Organization
Horse Plus Humane Society, the world's largest horse welfare organization, tirelessly works not just in the US but globally. Our organization is nestled outside of the charming town of Hohenwald, Tennessee, which is also proud to be home of the Elephant Sanctuary. Both colossal animal organizations, Horse Plus Humane Society and the Elephant Sanctuary, share this small but vibrant community as their home. The journey of Horse Plus began in Northern California back in 2003 and then relocating to Tennessee in 2015. We've expanded our facility to over 50 acres and over 30,000 square feet of covered buildings, complete with a large on-site veterinary hospital employing two full-time veterinarians caring for the rescued animals.
Create a lasting impact by safeguarding animals and providing them a new lease on life. This will stand as your enduring testament to the positive change you've brought to the world.
A compassionate community of horse welfare organizations across the U.S., stands ready to extend a helping hand to any horse in distress, regardless of their circumstances.

The Winter Months
Our expansive 30,000 sq. ft. covered areas enables us to function seamlessly even during chilly winter months. All animals can be accommodated under shelter during harsh weather conditions like ice storms or prolonged cold. With the covered spaces, we can ensure that horse training continues uninterrupted, and our veterinarians can perform surgeries operations in climate-controlled surgery rooms. We acknowledge the challenges horse owners face during winter, hence, we remain prepared to accommodate more animal intakes during this season.
