Horse Shelter Heroes – Episode 52 – January Auction Rescue
Every horse deserves a chance at a safe and loving life. At Horse Plus Humane Society, we’re dedicated to rescuing horses from auctions and the slaughter pipeline, giving them the care, medical attention, and second chances they deserve. This month, our first auction rescue of 2021 proved once again that with the support of our amazing community, lives can be transformed, one hoof at a time.

A Brand-New Trailer, A Big Mission
This month, the Horse Plus Humane Society launched its first auction rescue of 2021 with a brand-new, state-of-the-art trailer. Equipped with adjustable dividers, this trailer allows us to safely transport both full-size horses and tiny minis, giving us the ability to rescue even more lives in a single trip.
Braving the Cold for Compassion
Despite freezing temperatures, our team headed to the auction, determined to save lives. That night, we rescued 12 horses—11 full-size horses and one adorable mini. The auction prices were high, but thanks to your support, we were able to intervene and give these precious animals a second chance.
Immediate Care and Advanced Veterinary Support
Back at the shelter, each horse received thorough evaluations for injuries, arthritis, respiratory concerns and malnutrition. Donations from our supporters made it possible to administer calming treatments, like “Sin Chill,” ensuring the horses remained safe and relaxed after a stressful auction experience.
Our new wireless x-ray machine allowed us to quickly diagnose conditions like fractured bones and DSLD, streamlining the care process. While many horses will go on to thrive and find loving homes, a few were suffering too severely to recover. Last act of Kindness was provided when necessary, giving them peace and dignity.
Settling In and Looking Ahead
Once their immediate care was completed, the horses were settled in the barn for the night, with hay, grain, and plenty of warmth. Each rescued horse is a reminder of the lifesaving impact of our supporters. Across multiple states, your generosity helps us pull horses out of the slaughter pipeline and into safe, loving care.
