Horse Shelter Heroes – S5E33

Life at Horse Plus Humane Society is a constant whirlwind of motion and this week was no exception! From legal victories in the courtroom to tiny heartbeats on an ultrasound screen, our team has been working around the clock to give every animal the second chance they deserve.
Here is a look at the highs, the lows, and everything in between from our latest episode.

Victory in Court & New Arrivals

We started the week with some incredible news! Chandra returned from the courthouse with a signed care bond, meaning the 16 seizure dogs we’ve been caring for since January are officially in our custody.

But the intake didn’t stop there. Animal Control arrived with over 20 Aussie-mix dogs, bringing our triage total to 32 dogs in a single day!

It wasn’t just dogs, either! We welcomed a family of “landscaping” pigs that had been rooting up a local couple’s yard. After a quick microchipping session, we were happy to see them transferred to a specialized rescue where they can root to their hearts’ content.
Medical Miracles & Heartfelt Moments

A Tiny Heartbeat! We performed a trans-abdominal ultrasound on Mirabelle and were thrilled to see a developed rib cage and a flickering heartbeat. We have a baby on the way!

The Donkey Squad! Dr. Gina and Dr. Lydia powered through several successful donkey castrations, including Blizzard and Biscuit, clearing them one step closer to their forever homes.
The Long Road for Honey & Sapphire

Our hearts are currently with two of our bravest mares. Honey, the young donkey who arrived in horrific shape, received her first full soothing bath and a comprehensive set of x-rays.
While we found evidence of “periosteal reactions”, a bone bruising from past trauma, we are relieved there are no fractures. She is a fighter and we are fighting right alongside her.

Sapphire gave us a scare this week with a bout of colic and a worsening cough. Lab results revealed she is battling rare, multi-drug resistant bacteria. While her leg wounds are healing beautifully, her internal battle is much tougher.
We have switched her to aggressive injectable antibiotics and are monitoring her every breath.
Advocacy: Beyond the Barn

Rescue isn’t just about what happens in the stalls, it’s about changing the world outside them. We are continuing our regular trips to Washington D.C. to advocate for federal laws to end the slaughter pipeline.
Many lawmakers simply don’t know the reality of what these horses face and your support allows us to be their voice on a national stage!
Ending the Day, Starting Again Tomorrow

From hoof trims to surgeries, from new intakes to critical care, the day never really slows down. Even as the sun sets, the work continues from feeding, cleaning, monitoring, and preparing for whatever comes next.
Because in rescue, every day matters. Every decision matters. And every life is worth fighting for.
